Sorry for the NOOB question, but I have been searching forums, rules, etc and can't find the answer.
WHAT IS DEFENSIVE MAGIC? I hae a skill tree for it, but no idea what it is nor how to increase it.
Is there a link to somewhere where it is explained?
Thanks in advance.

The spells Stun, Fear, and Sleep are the defensive afflction spells. To increase your defensive affliction skill, you need to train one of these and use it in combat.
You can find descriptions of each by right-clicking on the spell in the trainer's list.
I personally don't like the defensive affliction spells much but I have stun and fear just to be able to use them to get the skill points in that branch.
As a general statement, you gain experience in any branch of the skill tree by using skills from that branch in the tree. If you look at the info from a skill at the trainer, it will tell you what branch it gives you experience in. Also, in your action progression window ('a' key), you can click on a branch in the tree and see what spells you can advance along that branch of the tree..

Healing is the other split of defensive magic in addition to defensive afflictions. This skill tree is outdated (it's from beta and several trees were removed since) but you can get an idea of how the magic tree splits (that part is still accurate except for no more self-magic *sniff*):

Oops, I read the original question as "Defensive Affliction" and not just "Defensive" magic. Yeah, heal is also defensive and far more valuable of a skill to have than the defensive afflictions, in my opinion.

careful about that statement - Affliction is very, very useful in groups and pvp. Having high afliction, you wont need healing 1/2 a time as stunned mob doesnt hit back and always gets a hit.

Even so, i stand by my statement that heal is FAR more valuable than defensive affliction. The affliction is definitely a "nice to have" in groups but heals is usually a "must have".

Thanks All!
I have added Fear, but when I use it I get nothing unless I kill the mob... And then because my ability to kill the mob far outways my lvl for defensive magic, I gain almost nothing...
Is there a way around this?
Thanks, Phil

That's one of the difficult things about soloing with defensive magic. Because it's defensive, it doesn't do damage to the mob. Therefore, you have to end up using a bunch of offensive spells or melee to kill the mob and that ends up getting most of the xp.
Defensive is easiest to level in groups. You can stun the mob that is being attacked or fear off adds. Because others in the group are doing the damage, you don't have to use your offensive spells so all of the xp goes to defensive.

It's so easy in fact that you'll feel like you're nothing but a brainless zombie hitting the '7' key ( or whatever you have your stun stanza mapped to ) over and over. Try it for over 150 levels, it's quite fun!!
Too bad only fighters get to double click and watch, we can't the rest of us?
