In all of the reading I have done, I have yet to see anything about any of the above. Are there Fortresses, Dungeons, Caves, Mazes of some sort, Destroyed Cities etc.. . You know the stuff you get to explore? Information may have passed me, but I can't recall seeing any information on any exploring, crawling substance?

I have read about, but never seen, the "prime root" which is an environment that is clearly dark and underground. I am hoping, like it sounds you are, that this game doesn't end up like Horizons, where there are NO underground caves to explore, underground raids were a BIG part of the fun I had in other games.
BUT I THINK that this game does have underground, it is just VERY high level (think raid levels in EQ or other MMORPG's) and since this game so far has at LEAST a level 250...umm I don't think anyone has gotten to "raid level" yet.
One screenshot I saw of the "prime root" environment had GLOWING florescent ferns and balloon trees, it was VERY ethreal and breathtaking.

Quick suggestion:
Firstly, you won't see anything like what you are after on the refugee (starter) islands. You'll have to go to the mainland. Second, on the mainland look on your map for anything unusual: Marked hills, caves, open areas, so forth. Right click on such areas and set a user landmark. Right click your compass and select your landmark from the landmark menu and set out. You'll find some very interesting areas (you might even stumble into the Prime Roots) and you'll find hordes of very large, very toothy and very mean critters just waiting to have lunch with you...or is that have you for lunch?

I searched the walls and pools in the refugee camp for something more exciting but to no avail.....
....well, I still got excited doing so. At least the landscape invites to explore and I am sure the mainland has lots of interesting places =)

You can consider prime roots as being huge dungeons.

Reubensi, i searched the old and new Ryzom website for half an hour now, but didn´t find what i was looking for: the proof of David Cohen saying: "There will be dungeons". But
I HAVE READ THIS SENTENCE before somewhere! I really did!
And for the Prime Roots? They are awesome! I´ve been there several times in the Betas, when they were still depleted of mobs and mats. But even without this, it´s great in there. There are many ugly but at the same time beautiful plants and gigantic shrooms growing and gelly-fish like baloons flying in the air. And you see little lakes of green slime and phosphorescent fungus-like plants on the walls. The Primes are the tunnels that connect the continents with each other. Just a cool environment!

"Awesome Vorax hits your head for 1100 damage"
Ooops.

So what level does one need to be before even considering a trip to the Prime Roots?

As DT noted elsewhere, even a lvl1 can navigate the Roots with a great deal of care and time and patience, oh and you will die at least once regardless...it's a given. So, really it depends on your skills as a player more than on your skills you've learned or your level.
