Where is the direction in Ryzom ?

Ok, I have been playing for a while now (3-4 weeks) as a Fyros and really don't understand the point of the game.

Reading the forums it seems like we are meant to build up the NPC guard in order to help fight of the Kitten invasion. I found one person on the way to Dyron who asked me to craft armour (forget exactly what he asked - maybe a package of armour) for the Fyros Imperial Guard which I didn't take at the time. When I went back to him to find out more, he was gone. How did people find out that this was the aim of the game? After 3-4 weeks I would have thought someone in game would have told me (I mean an NPC and not another player).

I am fighting in a team rarely less than 3 (occassionally 2 teams with 12 people in) all with levels 25 - 40. We never manage to get further than Dyron so do we just have to hope we can find someone to get us out of the area or mindlessly kill the same monster (Prime Isam and Goari) over and over agian until we reach level 100+ ?

The missions seem a little pointless, OK they raise fame and get me dappers but they don't actually lead me anywhere. No more info about the games objective and they don't seem to lead onto other missions. OK, hopefully the patch for the encylopedia will fix this but the encylopedia was only introduced a few days ago wasn't it ? What did people do before that ? Run around and mindlessly kill things for weeks on end, never leaving the starting city?

The game so far looks like it could have great potential with lots of tricks available in it (modular action, pretty spells, team play etc.) - it just doesn't seem to have direction. It seems as if lower level characters (20-40 is as far as we have got) have a very grinding time trying to level up to be able to get somewhere new - is it possible to get somewhere new (and I mean with an objective and not just to Thesos which is probably just another city much like Pyr - I know great waterfall but ....) at higher levels or am I stuck in the same grind for ever?

Basically what is the objective other than 'I have a new shiny pair of boots' or 'I am now level 150 but doing the same as I did at level 10'?

the barman gave me one mission (amber cube which I know was buggy and no complaints - it happens) but other than that it is just 'deliver a package to ....' or 'kill some intelligent plants' which I get again and again when I log back in.

And hints about what you found enjoyable appreciated.

I have heard they are doing a fix on encyclopedia missions yes, so that should be a few days, from what lawrence said on the other forums the patch is undergoing testing now.

As for the invasion, that was temporary and part of the fantastic continuing storyline in ryzom. All the homins of the 4 races are currently engaged in war with an evil aggressor called the kitin, after we defeated them in the nexus they gave us a very long commited invasion in the 4 lands, but the people united together and eventually drove them back. No two invasions are ever the same from what I have seen in my time. There are also many side storylines like OBA and wormy and the kami-karavan rivalrys. So the storyline is there and unfolding infront of our eyes :)

I have been playing ryzom for near a year now and I have continuously found new things to do and learn about the game, and people to play with. One of the fantastic things about ryzom is its superb community and its support from the CSR team of guides and GMs.

As for doing the same thing over and over, it is a lvling system, but in ryzom you arnt restricted to just melee all the time or just magic which can get boring. In ryzom u can do them all with 1 char. The equiptment looks nicer at higher lvls too, and you can edit and make your own skills which is very cool :)

I have just renewed my subscription to mid 2006 I love this game so much :) If you dont like it, thats not for me to argue with, but I find lots to do (especially as they are always adding more =)).

Klogger, I'm too tired to spell out all the amazing things this game has to offer. Suffice to say, come find me ingame and I'll flirt you into submission :p I have played innumerable MMOs and this one rocks more than any other. Oh to be wide awake and full of positive thoughts. However, I've been ingame for 15 hours now, absolutely LOVING every minute, and now I'm on auto-pilot - YAY! Please give us a chance, get to know the community, you will love us :)

Yay, Kibsy, the CSR are awesome. Many an evening I've spent chatting away to an infinately funny guide, swapping stories, taking the mick, passing the time of day. They are, without question, the most human (blummin' funny) and approachable CSR team I have met, full stop.

Klogger, you are so welcome to the community. I really hope to run into you ingame :)

all i can say is that this game blows big time!!!

now lemme explain: ryzom is a really bad game, because since i've started playing, i don't have a single spare minute to do something else.
Once you're hooked up to the community, found a guild and made some good friends online, you don't want to leave that world anymore - not for a second!

there's just so much to do! master one skill or level equally in several different skills, do rite missions, tasks, guild- and teamhunts, attend to player- or official events, explore, invasions, ...

i agree that you're somewhat limited in your actions if you are alone (since it's sometimes a bit hard to level alone), but with a team, everything's possible :)

as for the csr team: i don't see them or talk to them that often, but i can say that when i get in touch with them, they are always very kind and helpful.

now let me get back into game already!! :D

.:zee:.

Heh.. I think I can only agree with what you all said. I have been with Ryzom since OB1. I had the luck to be accepted into the Guild RoA and have ever been enjoying the game.
With the people you meet in the guild, or through the guild you can either level or just chat away. I had moments where I said "Forget the instant messangers, I am just gonna log into Ryzom to chat!"

Now the game has much to offer, and just like Kibs I find new things every single day and with that new challenges and wishes to accomplish certain things.
One thing that Ryzom has in common with every game, you have to level somehow. Yes.. when you first start off, you hit the suckling yubos with a club and level, and to get better you have to kill higher mobs. But I think that is just a common thing in all MMORPGS and every single player rpg.

Today was a good day for me, since OB1, it was the first time that I entered the PRs again.. and it was even more spooky and yet even more exciting as the last time.
As for the content... we had quite some people complaining about the lag of content, but with each bigger patch, we get new stuff. We got more missions, the Ency, mounts and hopefully in the near future the outposts.
Once the outposts are available, I think this game is going to enter a new dimension. It will be tense and just greater than before :D

And as the others said already, the Guides and GMs are just a blast. Every now and then, I just send them a hi and am caught in amusing and inspiring conversations. The best service ever.

So... since you probably played other games before.. download the manual, read the stories and the forums and you will get an idea why this world can be extremly absorbing :)

A few years ago, I was with a friend and he pulled some special mushrooms out of his pocket. We drank some tea made with these "intelligent plants" and watched some TV. They were playing football there.

Now that was the most pointless game I have ever seen, a whole lot of people (waaaayy too many) were running around like maniacs for, well, nothing really. Sometimes they would put the shirt on their face or form a heap. Very silly to look at, also because there was a guy in black everyone seemed to hate or shout at.

I realized later that all is in the eye of the beholder. The things you describe as pointless seem great to others, what you might like may seem worthless to your neighbour. This is why a lot of different games are in the market, they all serve a different niche.

If you are looking for advice on how to enjoy a MMO, just walk around ignoring the normal xp hunt, chat up with people, explore the lands. Maybe you like that?

everyone must find his/her own point in the game..

we had a thread like this before.. about a reward or something...

if we have to tell you what the reward is i think your playing the wrong game or you have not met the right peeps in game :)

use region chat to ask things you dont know develop your char..

its great fun but not everyone wants the same things out of a game :)

Firstly I should apologise to people. I am playing on the European server but accidentally posted to the North American forum first where I have also been replying to answers, I guess my last post there solidified my feeling a bit so here is the link in case anyone is interested:

http://ryzom.com/forum/showthread.php?t=10456&page=2&pp=10

Sorry for the confusion and thanks for the replies.

I of course agree that everyone has to find there own fun within the the game and I started this thread just to see if I had missed something important out of the game - such as missions or a community goal that we all had to help fulfill.

Is this just a quiet time in the life of Atys? or am I missing some grander plan because I have just not met the right people yet? The ones who are being active and trying to strenthen the 4 lands against the kitten? As far as I see everyone is just power leveling.

The guild I am in is new and so maybe we are all wandering about without any objective other than 'Lets kill some more Isam' and go up a level and get a shinier and bigger sword. Then again maybe I just don't talk to them enough but as far as I can see we have no plan and no one kows what to do.

This is an issue with all MMOGs - what is the purpose of playing?

To me, it's not about story, or friends, or quests or anything like that - it's all about having fun. Now, the things I just mentioned all add to the fun, but the only real question you have to ask yourself is "Am I having fun?"

If you're not, there's no real point in playing. If you are, there's your answer.

Having said that, as Ryzom grows and more stuff gets added, there will be more variety to keep you occupied so it's not just a grind to the shinier and better sword (as you so rightly put it). The slip in the schedule caused by various issues over the last couple of months has meant that Nevrax are probably not at the point they would have liked to have been at by now, and are trying to catch up.

Suffice to say that in a few months time new players joining will be amazed at how many things there are to do rather than just grind.

All in all, I'd say the same thing to anyone - if you think the game is fun now, it'll only get better for you as more stuff is added. If you're not enjoying the game, maybe take a break for a couple of months then come back and try again.

k, in regards to "whats going on, and what is the plan".

a kitin invasion was just defeated in all 4 lands, which was a 10 day long event. its quieter right now, we won, and got the invaded lands back

people power level, so they can participate in things that weaker or smaller characters cant do, or cant do as well.

there is enough back story out there for you to get a feel for where and what atys is, and what the scoop is with us 4 races and the kami and the kara etc etc. get into it, search out info if thats what youre into

knowing the backstory helps when trying to make choices about the direction you want to take with your character. who will you ally with, who will be your enemies? are you into missions and rites and knowledge? there is more and more of this stuff each month coming out, lots to see, learn, explore

one "plan" is to get big and strong, and get rid of the freakin kitin. they have had us trapped in the prime roots for too long, we just got out, and we aren't goin back....but of course, theres more goin on than just that :)
