The roleplaying is nice, but consists mostly of player vs. player action. The community in Ryzom is of a seldom seen high level (on Arispotle at least, I dont know the others, but heard good stories about the US servers), with nice people, that are competent in controlling game mechanics and storyline at the same time.
The quests are not always very well thought out, although that changed quite a bit in the last patch.
A BIG Event we had recently was the kitin invasion in the various lands, that took a whole lot of teaming, skill balancing in teams and community wide communication to take down. Read on the main site about the part this plays in the storyline and see this forum for all posts that tell you how great is was. The number of posts saying it was bad is less, and we both know what that means ona an internet forum
.
In Tryker (the Lake Lands) we had I think 50 people (at peaks) working together to archieve the same goal, all means of communication were used liek MSN, ingame chat, IRC, TeamSpeak.
In short, when I think about TTRPG, and how it roughly compares in roleplaying:
With other players : in your own hands, people are nice in general. Dont really expect big in depth roleplaying, most is of the level like the Yubo Liberation Front. A few guild wars too (but very rare)
Within a guild: very good, but again what you make of it yourself
Storyline: slowly getting somewhere, the game is live I think 4 months on a lifecycle that said 5 years?
Quests and missions: Very nice, not as good as some other mmo's out there.
Main reasons to choose Ryzom over WoW:
- Community. Ryzom requires just that tiny bit more intellect to understand too keep the 12 yo's at bay and to entertain the more mature people enough to stay. Very nice people and the more noobs are treated nice, the more they pass it on. This is reason no 1 for me to play.
- Leveling. You *can* level all, you dont have to explore all trees. It becomes very addictive to gain more and more lvl's, cant figure out why myself.
- Graphics. Very good eyecandy and on but not over the cartoonesque border.
- Game mechanics. Same as lvls.
I just think this game is better than WoW because of community. I think it is better than AO because of the look and feel of the world.
Try out and if you see me in game, lemme know!
