Welcomer's and Story

Are the welcomer's a vital part of the story or does the REAL story start when you get to mainland????? Can someone help

So far there is no story in game. Looks like it'll start in Patch 2 (~7 weeks from now)

The welcomers basically just send you around town to talk to different people, giving you a chance to become familiar with the town. They also give little tasks to help get you familiar with the skills and how they work.
I don't miss them as a Zorai, having done the task in beta. But I think they need to be fixed fast for those joining the game for the first time, as it is the initial impression for some people... not good to have the very first thing as you enter the game be broken

They also supply some story line coverage, although only in brief:
Basically, we support the Kami or Karavan and beware the other. The Fyros woke the kitins and the kitins are the enemy of all homins.

Notice that they're already having events in-game every day.
So it isn't like the story is on hold. The quests are simply backstory, it is the players who will make the real story.
I'm already being contacted by others who are starting up guilds interested in roleplaying. As more of these form and people join them I think we'll start seeing more and more story.
