How can you possibly make sweeping generalisations about how people want to play based on where they come from, like a US player is more likely to be a pro pvper supporting the karavan compared to a scottish bloke from aberdeen who is much more likely to be a roleplaying kamis - what a load of twoddle.

Because there are differences in playstyle between different cultures and these are observable.

Individuals are unpredictable and... individual. Larger groups are more predictable and you can note tendencies with some confidence.

If this wasn't true the whole advertising industry would collapse.

If you watch television, note the different character of advertising during the breaks in the show dependent on the nature of the show and the time of day. Some of this is due to the different costs of peak and off peak but it also depends on the identified audience of the channel and the show.

You'll note that the advertising around, say, a documentary on Channel Four at 10pm will be very different to that around a daytime talk/pundit show like Trisha.

This is also why we have the same products marketed differently, even named differently, in different countries. For years 'Snickers' bars were 'Marathon' bars in the UK (And I lament the loss of the name). Different products can even be marketed to extremely different markets, what can seem common as muck in one place can be considered high class in another.

None of that says anything about a particular individual within the demographic, it represents an attempt to target a tendency in the overall group.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demographic_profile

Other examples closer to home would be the differences between the Japanese and US console game markets which continue to cause problems for Microsoft and Xbox in trying to penetrate the Asian market, partly because of nationalist attachment to Sony and Nintendo in Asia but also because US developers have a hard time understanding the desires and playstyle of the Asian market.

One can also see differences here between the International English server and the French and German servers. One can observe it in the different TTRPG and boardgame markets, in the different styles of LARP and other related games which are played and understood wildly differently between different cultures.

Ryzom is no different and it would be rather precious to consider it to be somehow unique in this particular aspect.

Oh Grim, stop it. You are really starting to sound xenophobic.

Everybody who reads the forums knows your stance on PvP, telling it over and over starts to become a bit annoying. (I would almost start to PvP, just to show you are wrong.)

Back to topic: what a load of fuzz about a new server. Let's see what happens first, or wait for official answers from nevrax, instead of starting rumours about nothing.

I only mostly see the Euro community and will say there aint much difference between the playstyles. The Euros have a healthy PvP community (jayce/me/yaffle/final/lewy/whitefire/hunterx/Rundll/.......the list goes on and thats just the ones I know to be euros)

I wouldnt complain about kicking all those yanks out of my beautiful server tho ;) .......mayce cept all those in my guild, errrm and all the ones I like.......actually can we just kick all karas to the new server :P call it a second mirror planet where jena called them or something.........yeah.......man I have some amazing ideas ;)

When _you're_ getting the wrong end of the stick something is wrong.

And FFS (the following post) NOBODY IS F****G WELL TALKING ABOUT KICKING ANYONE OFF ANYWHERE!!!!

All that would need to be done would be to say 'Right, from now on this one is the EU server and events etc will take place in a Euro-friendly timezone. This one is now the US server and events etc will take place in a US-friendly timezone'. Allow transfers IF people want to, direct new sign ups to the right server - but don't say that they HAVE to and then let time and tide take their course until it self-corrects.

Nobody really loses, everyone benefits, not only from less OP battles at 4am on a work night, but from less repeated events and servers more suitably attuned to the desires of their particular communities and overall playstyles.

Why is that so f****g controversial, especially when it was first posited by someone else?

Yeah, I'd likely lose some mates in a server shift, if they _decided_ to go but for long term viability I think this could only be a good thing and an opportunity to gently undo the timezone problems - which are currently unique to Arispotle.

I'm not even particularly/necessarily talking about PVP for the love of fate, though it'd be improved and made less stressful by removing the timezone issue. So don't try to pin this one on my dislike of PvP alone.

When I saw there was a new server I got quite excited, for the first time in a long time when it comes to Ryzom!

It reminded me of ... Rebirth

The idea of a fresh start is a good one, IMHO.

If Cho only allows new characters and no inter-server transfers, it is very likely that it will be the most stable of all the servers.

Mission items from Silan will bridge the 'crafter gap', until players have chance to skill up.

I personally feel the first 150 lvls in all the trees are the fun ones. There was never much post 200 content that didn't get very repetitive, very quickly.

The old meeting places will re-emerge.

It will take a while for the ‘Twinking Culture’ to redevelop.

The presence of PvP, FvF, GvG from the start means that there will not be the same culture shock that ripped Aristople apart. Players will know the rules from the start; they will know that they are playing Risk™ and not Sim City™.

I have placing The Saga of Ryzom™ on the ‘Played game shelf’.

I will give Ryzom™ on Cho another go. Part of me knows that it will not be the same as the great land rush of 2004, as the Knowledge learned about the world can be transferred, so there will only be re-discovery for me.

… I will wait an see why Cho has been created, I am too sceptical of Nervax to not think there is no hidden agenda, or false hope.

Grim, arent ya the guy that said that no people wants a challenge and everyone just want to win?

You might be a clever guy. As it seems in some of your posts.
But you gotta work on your stereotyping dude.
You put everyone in the same place.

I am very concerned about getting enough new players on Arispotle once Cho is opened. Overall I think that the server population on our server is still far too small. Also, a permanent influx of new blood is needed.
Anyway, what will be will be.

On the other hand, I am not concerned much about cross server trades. Yes, Cho may get invaded by farmers from the 3 existent servers... and for a few months there may be an influx of goodies back from Cho.
But sooner or later, the real Cho players will win all the farmer OPs - because the farmers have no chance to advance enough unless they spend significant time on Cho.
