support for a group of people who know a lot about the game, have in part developed and run it doesnt deserve posts about theft and so on, regardless of how naive it might seem.
Disappointing, especially from this community.
Naive is right.
I choose to take the time to inform the naive players of the world that there is a good chance that this is -EITHER- a scam, or -LAME-.
There is next to -0- chance that this is a legitimate way of keeping Ryzom alive, and that means that its praying off of the fears of the current player base that really cares about this game.
I'm going to repeat that.
There is next to ZERO chance that this is a legitimate way of keepign Ryzom alive. The only pledge of support you need to be giving is your pledge of support here, to the Nevrax staff, to tell them that they have a wonderful game and that you fully intend to continue paying for it. Pledging support to some vain and futile effort that 'could' be a scam is silly, as much as its a show of heart I would rather choose to appear heartless and nasty, than let people get ripped off because of their naivette.
You're dealing with someone who is secretly emailing 'select' portions of the player base without any previous dealings with them and has shown no sign of being trustworthy other than claiming to be Xavier. And unless you PERSONALLY know one of the people claiming to be part of this grand pipe dream, then those names mean next to nothing because you can't even verify the veracity of their claim to those people's support.
Chance of working = 0%
Chance of it being a scam = >0%
I don't like those odds.

Free MMORPG under GNU license can be done and can be viable.
You can check one here with "Planeshift"
This project is even hardier to realise than the one discuted in this thread because all is free (no buying and no monthly fee).
As said before, this project is the only one we can refer to at the moment.
We don't want to see Ryzom disappear.

I'm going to wager that no one purchased the rights to this game and then made it free after spending a few million dollars on those rights?

Good to know and thanks for the encouraging words you have given us.soulsnatcher wrote:I'm positive I'm not going anywhere

Re: Check your inboxes people.
Just as my own two cents worth, buying Ryzom and keeping it running are two entirely different issues. Even if every player on here gave sufficient money to buy it outright, I absolutely gaurantee that without someone with business sense at the helm, it would be dead within 6 months (optimistically) and everyone would have wasted thier money. That is, of course, assuming that all of the people begging for free subscriptions and handouts to pay thier monthly subscription fees suddenly won the lottery and could afford to chip in.
The way that the servers are structured, this isn't going to fly as a community-run environment in someone's basement. There's a significant infrastructure and bandwidth expense associated with it. Then there's the cost of support staff, licensing, vendor support agreements, data center and office facilities, etc.
I honestly don't know what the situation at Nevrax is or how deep in the hole they are. It may be that it's not salvagable. It may be that the game is haemmoraging so badly that it simply can't support the infrastructure costs. Then again, the online game may be propping up other investments that are bleeding. I simply don't know. However, nothing of any value is going to happen through sheer force of will or by people throwing quarters into a plate.
I think that the most rational approach would be to make sure that the creditors understand that the community is serious about keeping this game alive and if, for some reason, this transition doesn't happen, we'd appreciate the opportunity to view the financials and assemble a business case/proposal to keep it alive. I highly doubt that, given a choice, they'd choose to bury the game rather than have a shot at a positive revenue stream. It's ALWAYS about the money. Demonstrate that the game is a viable investment and it'll stay alive. Fail and it will be gone faster than a jelly donut at a weight watchers meeting.
So....my suggestion would be to put together a team to represent the community and request an opportunity to review the financials and submit a proposal. It may not be neccessary if the transition is successful. But if you wait until the last minute, it will be too late. (if it isn't already)
*addendum* In case it isn't obvious, the team needs to be people with business expertise and/or access to capital, not a group of L250 fighters who "r00l da rootz". This is business, not a popularity contest.

well gosh thank you for sparing your valuable time to explain things to us simple folk, of course you know best and must be right. after all you can use CAPITALS and have been around long enough to know all about the history of Nevrax and the people involved.kirzen wrote: I choose to take the time to inform the naive players of the world that there is a good chance that this is -EITHER- a scam, or -LAME-.
