Another ex-SWG player here. Although the major changes to SWG didn't really kill my love of the game. For me, after three plus years, it just got old. Nothing really excited me about the game. I did miss the old skill system I loved mixing and matching different careers to make my chara unique but thats long gone now. Not to mention that the amount of Jedi in game was just WRONG.
But what really pee'd me off was the amount of moaning and complaining that was done on the forums. People complained about this that and the other change and demanded something else but even when they got what they wanted they still moaned. That killed SWG more for me than anything else. After reading all the moaning complaints on the offical boards I just didn't want to login and play.
Anyway after SWG I wandered aimlessly for a while. Beta tested DDO, again a good game but too much emphasis on grouping. I can never tell when I'm going to be able to play so arranging to do a mission with a group at a particular time is too hard to manage.
So then I tried World of Warcraft - to be honest I d/l the trial and played it for about 2 hours and then never logged in again. I already have Guild wars which is free to play and WOW was not anything vastly different from GW to make me want to pay to play it.
So then i tried Eve, tbh nothing to write home about. I'm still playing it atm but only because all my old guild moved to Eve after SWG. I don't really have the encentive to renew again at the end of my current sub.
Went to see superman last night so that has re-ignited my inner super heros so I may reactivate my accout for City of Heroes - fun game if limited but it's a fun blast.
Was out shopping over the weekend and say Ryzom for 2.99 with one month free and thought "why not? monthly sub would cost me more than that and iirc it's pretty high on the mmorpg.com charts atm" so I picked it up. After a few hours d/l the patches and stuff I spent a few hours wandering around last night.
Not bad I have to say. Mixing and matching fighter/mage/crafter skills atm and loving the freedom and variety it is giving me. plus I like the way the missions are not handed to you (EG)
In swg you get a kill x of y mission. you get a waypoint to go find the y that you have to kill.
In Ryzom you get a kill x of y mission you also have to go find y. This is nice, it means even the lower level missions you have to do some work and makes the mission feel more rewarding.
I'm still on the starter island afaik atm but so far I'm enjoying what I'm seeing. Haven't seen to much of the AI of the NPC's yet but I did notice a parade of some creatues last night (still learning the names but began with a B). Which struck me as rather "Organised" for NPC's which impressed me.
If I could make a suggestion or someone tell me if it's something you can already do?
Waypoints - the ability to make these - for eg to trainers etc would be a great navigational aid.
Otherwise I'm enjoying my time so far.
