Ryzom

heh well nothing much out there I haven't tried so if ryzom doesn't continue I guess I wont be playing any mmorpg's until a new generation comes out

I am looking forward to "lineage 3" and hope they control the gold farmers if and when it gets made and released in north america

Also might try vanguard although it looks like an eq2 clone to be honest but I didn't mind eq2 (when it was new and not "fixed" by soe's fixings methods) I just get kinda tired of playing an elf or an orc ....

apart from that I have started playing a lot off strategy games which at the moment seem more fun because I am getting tired of the bankruptcy and fixing and whatever other company related issues that occur

lineage2 would have been a keeper but I got tired of the gold farmers (i'm not a huge pvp'er but I loved the sieges they seemed "spectacular" to me and that I enjoyed .. I hated the flaming, inarticulate kiddies who insulted you, your mother, your brother and their descendants if they wanted to try to get you to pvp...) but the game itself i found nifty. ONly thing is about second year into the game I started having issues with the camera and had to quit as it started giving me virtigo so hopefully that stuff gets fixed and the game itself is managed better. I have a friend who used to be in the business of mmorpg's and lineage2 was held up as the hallmark example of how to mismanage an mmorpg (not swg hehe)

EQ2 I liked well enough but didn't fall in love with it (Like housing decorations etc etc etc) but something borred me about it and then they started with the fixes to crafting and so well there went another game down the tubes

liked matrix online kinda but it was very repetitive..

so yeah i'm busy playing offlne games like ceasar IV and company of heroes right now... and hoping ryzom keeps going. The big draw to ryzom was the active community, lack of mean spirited people and the graphics and gameplay is fun haven't found a game like that for awhile almost had everything I was looking for (just wish the housing was decoratable etc)

okay well shutting up now but since the free trial was busy being manipulated when I signed up I suspected there was a problem and well I guess my suspicsions were right

Some of my opinions about some of the games what I have played.

Horizons: http://www.istaria.com/
If I would have to look all games what I have played, what's the closest to Ryzom, I would have to say the Horizons. It has same kind of dynamic enviroment system and player community kind of feeling. But there is no PvP and the game system is tecnically below Ryzom. Graphics okey, little old and a lot more lag.

EQ2 is also nice game, has a lot of good in it. Only major problem is lack of real range combat and extreame linear character development. But graphics and game atmosphere is very good. NPCs actually have voice there. Carfting is hard work, but complex enough. Even melee combat can be more then just same hiting and hiting. But basicly after first hit, all combat is in melee range.

This is also fun action like game, those who likes superheroes. has one of best combat feeling what I have met. I mean it's all about action and it has good possiblities use range fighting too. Grapchis isn't the best but good enough. Has PvP possiblities, but most the player base is just PvE players. Also grouping isn't so easy in later levels, for some unknow reasons. Hole game is all about doing missions (quests).

This is nice game too, but it's very small, because everyting happens in one town. It's all about doing dungeon quests. You often end doing same quest again and again. Character development is good and complex enough. Also rogue like character and traps in dungeon is nice. Grapchis is good and atmosphere is nice.

Ultima Online: http://www.uo.com
One of the oldest mmogs. It still has one of the best character development system and the enviroment is more complex than any other games. You can grow plants, decorate houses, build houses, craft, harvest, dye cloths and so on.. Only problem is that it's graphics is totally outdate. Using still in isometric views.


SoE in general has one major problem, they attitude. They only care about money and they think simple games is the only way. Give pretty graphics and something to grid, that's they business model.

Ion seems a cool game...but think its not ready yet.

If the worst happens I should probably leave MMO's for abit and get on with many unstarted projects round the house while waiting for a look at Vanguard, they mention player crafted boats n ships which appeals.

In reality I may have a look back at Horizons for Nostalgic reasons or try WoW for abit although twice I have tried that and never got past a few hours.

Other option, see where the majority of Evo end up and tag along would be funny without them, prolly spend more time with them than my RL family.

Anarchy Online was ok, I've gone back to that for short periods from time to time. Always kind of disappointing to me that it had huge soaring cities that really only contained 6 shops. Pretty game to look at though, has that in common with Ryzom. The random instanced mission system got a bit repetitive but was a bit better since you could keep looking for a mission till you found one that was a needed upgrade or piece of equipment or weapon you needed. There were even (allowed) 3rd party programs people wrote that would keep scanning missions until rewards meeting your keywords popped up. Upgrading your implants was a constant chore though. It was interesting for being sci-fi and the pvp that varied by zone "threat level" (safe, faction pvp, mayhem) allowed you to decide how much risk you wanted. The Alien Invasion expansion kind of ruined it a bit because all the wide open spaces that were so immersive to hunt in became dominated by enormous guild owned "city blocks" that allowed guilds to fight off aliens. There was one Junkyard with a named bot to fight that used to be in the middle of a desert and the last time I was there, it was in the midst of these generic "cities" and the feel was ruined. Gridstream Radio is a great player-run radio though and they throw wonderful ingame parties with fun dancing.

Second Life is free but you can't own property, build permanently or get much of an allowance unless you upgrade to paid. For free you are really just a tourist. (Similar to ActiveWorlds which is still around but more primitive.) Lots of fringy communities and special interest groups have found a great home there, people are very creative with object, house and avatar creation, clothing and accessories stores are everywhere, and yeah it can get a bit kinky in the mature zone. I umm...nevermind. My SL character has some outfits and animations that make me blush. Amazing themeparks...lots of furries! Kinky people. Don't let your kids play SL.

(They actually have a branch of SL for kids but I can't imagine much less goes on over there, it would just have a less well refined vocabulary.)

EQII was ok I just had played EQI for 6 years and it was too close to what I got tired of in the first game. The combat system with openings (opportunities) and even the interface is (was, at least) similar to Ryzom. Crafting probably has changed since I was there but it used to be based mainly on drops and forages similar to Ryzom. Drawbacks...well it's SOE. I won't pay SOE a dime ever again.

City of Villains has the advantage of being an improvement of most everything they learned from City of Heroes. Almost everything is better than CoH. Eventually they will patch the improvements back to CoH zones. I tire easily from yet another sewer maze with yet another group of enemy faction (insert here.) The only thing that changes much is the level of opponents. The higher level zones that you eventually get access to as you progress are worth it though because the villain zones are very well done. Fully modelled cities with activity and belching smokestacks over factories and ships at dock and it is pretty immersive. My problem with either game is you reach a milestone when you gain your super movement power. Suddenly instead of trotting across town you can fly! Or leap tall buildings! Or teleport, or run super fast! Once I reach that there really isn't a similar milestone to look forward to other than improving your skills. Seems to me to be all downhill from there.

I currently play EVE-Online as well as Ryzom. EVE lends itself to casual play depending what you want to do. People either gravitate to combat or mining/building though the branching skilltree allows a lot of specialization to be a trader, stealth expert, ambusher, heavy ship captain, researcher...really you can do what you want. One plus is, you can always be learning a skill. Your xp is time. Every skill has 5 levels, and may be a prerequisite at a certain level for some further skill. You tick down to learning the next level of any one skill 24 hours a day whether logged in or not. You can see how much time is left and you can time it or switch skills so you don't finish training and then be training nothing until the next day, and there is a branch of the skilltree devoted to raising stats that make you train related skills faster. While it is true that older players have a 2-3 year head start on skilling, everyone goes in different directions and no-one skills up everything. You can be a competent battleship pilot in a surprisingly short time and get into pvp but the advantage a veteran pilot might have is they spent the time to take skills that increase missile range or something. However new characters can and do get the drop on veteran players and blow them up or ransom them. It cannot be said that there is no point in playing if the game is older and you can never "catch up." A lot of those veterans are either working on alts, or flying dreadnaughts in vast alliance wars that won't be involving you, not at first anyway. They are about to launch the next phase of the game, Kali, which is going to emphasize the conflict between the 4 races. How much teams pvp that will involve remains to be seen. CCP is a great company and I'm hoping they might be one of the ones looking at Ryzom

I am hoping to try Vanguard because Sigil is made up of so many ex-Verant people (who made EQ in the first place.)

WoW is not as bad as everyone makes out, I was just tired of the whole dwarves and orcs thing by that point so it didn't hold me. Taurens are pretty cool, no bull.

I entered online gaming from NWN and will probably leave to NWN2. But NWN's persistant worlds and MMOs really have very little in common. Ryzom is a place for relaxation and socializing while I never could idle in my NWN gaming (with those pesky DMs spying on you).

I wish I liked EVE, but it just gets incredibly boring very fast.
I could like Anarchy Online, if the graphics were better.
I have a Roma-Victor account, but I don't think that game will be enjoyable very soon.

I've already gone and hopefully to where most players aren't lol, for lack of choice of places to go and most new mmorpgs being so much toss I can't be bothered to explain I went to eve, it's a big and desolate universe there and I'm quite happy to go there. My advice is wait for the new patch kali anyone else going as new characters allegedly can start with a lot more skill points than old ones.
