Excellent post!
Personally, I think every point highlighted is an advantage, with lag of quests being a possible exception... but in all fairness, that part is not ENTIRELY true... I've found that Encyclopedia Quests does an adequate job of satisfying my addiction :)

As a new player I found the OP friendly but not very useful. It doesn't help me play today's game any better. Personally I don't care about Invasions or about arguing whether it's hard to solo. And "ask other players, join a guild" is generic MMO advice you see in every game.

Fortunately a bit of Googling found Ryzom sections at Warcry, Vault and a few others. And Ryzom.com itself has some useful guides. Unfortunately there was a lot of guide-writing energy spent during Beta and the first few months of Release and not much since. Sometimes the comments tell you what's changed, but not always. Ryzom Paradise has some good databases. I'm still looking for any other really great resources out there.

This isn´t meant as any adivce on how to play :)
This is meant as an advice on what to expect in this game, nothing more nothing less.

Some great Game ressources include:
http://www.ballisticmystix.net wich is now back again without Servertrouble. But be warned: Potential Spoliers ahead!

and
http://ryzom.raum.com/

Enjoy :) and welcome to Atys.

I've played quite a few MMORPG's in the past 8 years. From Ultima Online then off to Everquest and Star Wars Galaxies just to name a few. All of them have had their good points...and bad.

When I look at playing a new game or trying something different I never compare or gripe about things that upset me about said game that I'm playing. However as an older gamer (Yes, I'm one of those old farts you speak of *grins*) and I've been looking at this game for sometime now and I always see that the people that post on it are the ones that have given themselves up to it so to speak.

Now I haven't played it yet as I'm still downloading and I wanted to do some reading on the forums before I started and this post was the first one that I was directed to and I see why now.

Very insightful information on this game and MMO's in general. If everyone took the time to ponder the things that you've stated in this post then maybe there wouldn't be so many people out there that play a game for a short period of time and then quit coming to the user forums to just complain and lash out against the ones that have found something special in that game.

So I say. Keep up the good work and I'm very upbeat about my choice to be joining what seems like a very mature and tight-knit community.

2. Ryzom´s got Invasion.

Some of you complain about the Invasion "ruining their gameplay".
Let me ask you:
How can something that, as announced, lasts for only a few days ruin your gameplay?
While I see your reasoning in other threads I fail to see a real impact or sigificance to any of them if I take into account that
a. The Event lasts only a very limited amount of time
b. It´s a chance to do something else then grind.

These Invasions are part and parcel, bread and water, flesh and bone to Ryzom. Ryzom has got a rich background that the developers constantly try to inplement into the actual gameplay itself.
One part of that background is that the Homins were driven out of their old habitats by the invading Kitin and are now trying to "rebuild their future" in a new part of the world. Like in a pretty popular movie the survival of Homin-/Human-kind depends on it´s ability to defend itself from the invading bugs.

Would you like to know more?

I quessed so.
The Kitin are hellbent on the destruction of all Homins and will infrequently invade the known lands to reach their goal and annihilate all sentient beings on Atys bark.
Invasions now are your chance to participate in history. And history, as is well known, takes a long time in the making. So please don´t expect "the Saga" to be over in a few days or even month.
Even if you are not level 150 in any branch of the skilltree you will be able to help.

I invite you now to step over your shadow and team up with other Homins sharing your goal.
Ok, I´ll have to correct that Point a bit now :)
And because of no more being able to do that via Edit, I´ll do it like this :p

2. Ryzom´s got Invasion.

Once in a while the Kitin will grow restless down there in the Prime Roots andwill come swarming up in great Numbers to get rid of that pescy Homins.
Other "Invaders" might happen to, Barbarian Hordes might try to conquer the new lands also.

If this happens it can make "normal" gameplay very difficult if not impossible.
Some of you might complain about the Invasion "ruining their gameplay".
All I can say for that is that these Invasions are supposed to do that.
They are supposed to interrupt the normal gameplay and provide a means for the Homins to unite and for everyone to do something else than Grind.
They tend to last only a few days, so nothing is realy lost druing these periods and instead there are normaly rewards to be gained by fighting the Invasion.
Rewards even a lowlevel Charakter can gain. Through Soloplay of course but better through teaming up with others.

So don´t let something that just lasts for a few days "ruin your Gameplay". Take the opportunity to do something else, to egt to know new people and to generaly have FUN!

Ok, maybe I'm a bit egocentric, but...

As I can remember, this "open letter" (A very good one, must I say) was in response to some newbies' complaints.

I was one of these newbies. And my complaint about invasions was mainly that, while I'm sure that they was inmensely fun for the most experienced players, was a game-breaker for the newbs (*Specially* the soloers). So, as I was a low level character (50-60) and a soloer (I have a very strong solo tendency by times), I can say thet your affirmation "Rewards even a lowlevel Charakter can gain. Through Soloplay of course but better through teaming up with others." is, simply and plain, wrong.

Now I have a stronger character, and for sure I'll find very, very funny an invasion and will take tons of fun from it; but, even now, I'll find very good from the devs make easier the life of the newbies that hardly can make himself with two scowling gingos, not to say three feeble kittins, and make the life in the lvl50 areas a little easier... more dangerous, for sure, but a little easier. I still remember how some news was in Yrk for a long time making nothing (I was reading a book, really), while we wait to some others with best level clean the camp for us can go to natae or the Green Seed village to kill some kipees and gain some XP without being killed every ten meters.

So: fine the invasions, I want more, but please, devs, think in all people; only 4 areas from more than 60 needs to be a little more clean.

But, I insist: the invasions are a wonderful idea, and are needed on Atys, but migth be the newbs areas a little more clean. After all, there is no hole to PR in that areas, I think... harder for the kitins reach there.

Why do people want the game easier? The game was far harder at launch then it is now. The have made it much easier and that's not enough? I to soloed most of my early levels because of my hours. If they make it much easier what's the reward? I personally enjoy that the game when was harder. The joy in acheivement is overcoming what's hard.-Kil

For the first kitin invasion in October '04, I don't think I had a level over 35, a bit lower than many of the friends I knew from teaming together. I died the second that any invasion kitin so much as looked at me, but I thoroughly enjoyed every minute and I did get to run around all over Majestic Gardens, sometimes having to respawn, sometimes getting put back on my feet, sometimes just getting plain lucky :) . And I came away with a great tale, some strong friendships, and a weapon blunted against all the dirt and trees I hit while I was swinging at the kitins. Oh and a healthy DP :D .

That invasion did only last one night, if I recollect correctly. I was thirsty for more the next day when I logged in, though, and very disappointed when it dawned on me that there wasn't to be anymore for a while. A very, very long while, as it turned out :( .

That was my perspective, then, as a newbie.
