In order to get new players, concessions and compromises have to be made. I'll speak only for myself here, not for anyone else, especially not the company currently attempting to turn a profit operating Ryzom.
Hard a*s?
We have a reputation as the friendliest, most helpful, most polite, most mature community in any MMO. Deservedly, in my experience.
We do seem to expect new people to try to act accordingly. I won't apologize for that, nor would I want it to change.
We also have a reputation for enjoying the difficulty of our game, reveling in it, even. It
is better, for us, at least. I personally believe there are more than enough people in the world who enjoy an intelligent challenge to keep Ryzom afloat with subscriptions. Easy is boring.
Nor does the game need to have two million subscribers to be profitable. If it offers enough fun and benefit to people who enjoy this particular niche, it will garner enough revenue to continue.
I think that spiderweb is, so far, doing exactly what Ryzom needs - except for communication. Bug fixes, events, and ongoing development. A sense that the game is no longer static. I'm hopeful that better communication is coming soon, along with more patches (once they are well-tested) and more events. I'm already seeing a marked increase in forum traffic, and not just from old players who can post again.
We've had a nice "morning" since the servers restarted, waking up slowly and looking around. It feels like we are about to get up and get going now.

Actually, yes, sometimes we are.
Some of us vets get a bit arrogant (or tired, if you prefer) after playing this game so long. We know why we love it, we know the faults, mostly because we've discussed them over and over.
So, now and then, when a new player joins this game, he asks questions, points out faults (which we already know), tries to discuss things why they should be different, etc, etc.
And then he might get a reply 'this has been discussed a hundred times, if you don't like it, leave!'.
Also, most players *know* this game. Or maybe I should write *LIVE* this game. They know the best recipes, know where to dig supreme mats, killed that named boss 50 times, and sneaked Bounty Beaches solo with a lvl 5 toon... So when a new homin starts to asks questions, they just might roll their eyes, and answer quite directly.
Yes, this community is one of the most helpfull around (actually too helpfull if you ask me, because we spoil the new players with cats, amors and weapons) but it results in a bit of attitude as well...

i fully agree with Sxarlet.
The community is friendly and helpful but yes it is really TOO MUCH helpful spoiling new players in-game experience. Moreover, don't u (addressed to people actively supporting this "extremely friendly helping" style) think that all this can just lead to Ryzom's community becoming filled with "get lots of stuff for free, get max level fast, feel extremely proud/satisfied (or whatever they feel), get bored, leave" players? If u're in lack of these why don't u just go play WoW? A mature person who plays the game not only for power leveling but also because he/she likes the game, its storyline and lore, its community would not want these tons of free help. (thx god i've seen and still see examples of such people in Ryzom, too bad that there are not too many of them)
"this has been discussed a hundred times, if you don't like it, leave!" ---> Unfortunately, i think this is not even worst u can hear in uni. As for me seeing in process of some faults/feature lacks/etc discussions such statements as "it's ok i like Ryzom for what it is (regarding broken economy for example)"/"why do u ask if u can jump in this game? i've never had a single thought abt it and didnt ever want this feature all XX years i play Ryzom" and etc - that what's worst. Being friendly and helpful community, loving the game u've spent several years with does not mean u should be fanatic and say these stupid (yes, this is rude word but it suits best here). Why don't u want ur favourite world of Atys to develop and become more intresting and exciting place to spent time in? What abt me - i really want new content for this game - yes, i want to jump, yes i want economy to be fixed, yes i want new lands/skills/events and even much more. And all this does not contradict Ryzom's storyline, there r lots of things that will fit the game's style.

Sorry jared, I got a bit carried away there, directing things at you that were meant to be general statements. I realise you didn't actually argue against kitin patrols. I agree with you they could be given much better behavior than they had, (and that'd be totally awesome) but for starters I'll take the old patrols over no patrols.
And, I especially agree to that second bit too. Those that really want the PR harder, want it harder for everyone, not just for other people.

Adressing a few points:

Strange, isn't it the case in every single game out there ? There will always be people that don't act according to the game's etiquette. There will always be players that will not care about the community. There will always be players that simply want to mess up everything thing just fur fun.
People have to stop pointing at specific types of players. Think globally. The game will not change to satisfy a small percent of the community. The game has to change to try to satisfy the global community. Otherwise, they will always change it because one other community part is not satisfied with it. What one likes, someone else doesn't !
Think globally !
There will always be some players that will not like Ryzom.
There will always be some players that will love Ryzom.
There will always be some players that will complain for nothing.
There will always be some players that will complain for good reasons.
Which type of player will the Dev team put their priority on to do some changes ?

This downtime is intended to install a small update to the servers and also to allow us to test the procedure for updating Ryzom servers in real situations.
I read the above quote from the patch notes to read they are either tweaking the protocol for clientside patching or the code was a mess so they had to redesign the client/server patch interface.
Now that the patch process is complete, you can now start your "QQ" regarding patches, that are almost all clientside, that haven't been implemented. The queue for QQ about clientside patching starts below this post.
I too look forward to some forward progress in the evolution of this game. it's been way overdue... almost 4 yrs overdue.

So, it seems that ever since this patch, forage sources that blow up or gas while under mode 5 do the amount of damage they did long ago again (roughly equivalent to mode 0 or 2), which is quite a bit less than they had been doing for years now (ie. equivalent to mode 4). Since mode 5 was usually the one to give the insta-kill explosions, this makes foraging a LOT safer than it was.
Was this intentional and just forgotten to be included in the list (ie. was it a mistake that mode 5 ever did so much damage in the first place and was it now fixed?) or should I report this as a bug?

I don't know if you have noticed as well but if you get chased by aggro and survive long enough to escape, the
"(random mob name) has left combat" message will appear in your sys. info just like it used to a while ago.
