One thing that perhaps ought to be done is simply submitting articles, copies of announcements, etc. to MMO websites every time anything happens. Some games maintain awareness of themselves by making news even when it's practically just a developer going to the toilet and taking a crap.

FilePlanet, oddly enough..
i remember seeing the Ad with the cute jumping out at you, i was looking for a game to play (something i havent done since actually, go figure) and figured i'd give the game a read-over.
The story instantly caught my attention. i was amazed. I played Beta for as long as i could. (missed out on focus beta, damn overseas trips
)
i was hooked from day 1
EDIT :: hey my story is just like dragonman's story! except that i had to wait a full year after the game came about before i finally got my bank account
(and let me tell you, the same day my card came in, i purchased my sub for ryzom.. was the first thing i ever bought on it i think!)

Cool thread! The stories of all the "happened by chance" are great.
There's alot of games out there, and none compare to this little gem hardley anyone knows about. However that may have come to be,by no advertisement to very little.I got the promo for the open beta from Gamespot(is free to join and regularly sends out beta invites).
I had played D&D before there was anything advanced(AD&D) about it lol.In fact this was the first online PC MMO I'de ever played.I had just gotten EQ for the playstation and my bro came back from Florida with gifts of a PC and with an internet connection I was off and running.Got the promo for this and was hooked instantly.
Ryzom had some bumps in the road though and I opted to not pre-order.I read some in the forums and after the first patch I promptly joined.
I have and allways have been a fan of fantasy and sci-fi.Ryzom is the perfect mix of both, and with a community like what is here is mixed in, it makes for a heartbreaking end when they pull the plug.
The single most exciting online experience I have ever had to date and don't think it will ever be repeated was the first major Kitin raid(before we all became wayfarers').When a couple hundred kitin of all types and sizes had people running to the lake and outbuildings only to be slayed anyways. They exstinguished all homin life in Dyron and took it over. After many defeats and some cunning and clever meatshieldry, many homin gathered to look upon their fair city in ruins and set forth one last time and claimed our prize.Victory! After days of battles we had taken our Desert lands back. That is how I wish to remember Atys for allways. The commoradarie and willingness to push forward against overwhelming odds and achieve many great victories. And to laugh like hell at how many ways you can be slain!
Vixen, On agian, off again Leader Knights Leviers.
Long time on again, off again Eccentric Fyrosian Dabbler
You don't really know how much you miss something till it's gone!

So has anything been planned to investigate ?
As the game is originally from Europe, marketing would be less of an issue there then here in America. Just looking at the English poll says something :
Through game advertisements on Internet sites or magazines
37.72%
A friend recommanded it to me
33.33%
Discovered it by pure luck
28.95%
Never heard about it or never actualy played it
0%
60% of the English players who anwered this say they did not see any advertisement. That says alot !!!!!!!!!!
2-3 months ago, I personnally sent an email to
http://www.mmorpg.com to do an article on the coming back of Ryzom. They said the request was sent to the director.
I guess they already started saying something ...

the little monkey started somehow talking about him getting in the beta and lovin it so i told em get me a key and we will see
He did almost instant and well here we are years and 1000s of hours later

My son was pining about not being able to get into some beta he applied for. My company had quite a beta testing resume so I started tracking announcements of new games and read about Nevrax's "new idea". Submitted company resume offering to help and got selected.
When "I" got in, I installed client on his computer to 'surprise" him when he got home from school. he played abit ... went on to Lineage or something but I was hooked.
Played beta, open beta, FBT, and those days are still my very best memories.
-Working with Themis Group in NA
-Discovering we could actually kill those beasties beyond "the bridge" and doing it over and over in multiple teams and losing 2 outta 3 teams every 5 minutes or so.
-Taking weeks to get to level 50
-Meeting my first person who actually dug
-Wondermat
-RAIDs
-The 1st exploit I can remember was punching a dozen yubos and self healing yaself over and over.
-Figuring out inventory bugs
