I'm complaining with the people who say "don't ask this or that" or "go another forum to see info". Only with that people, not with the people who said things about the question, even if I don't think the same.

"dont ask" i haven't seen in this thread. "here's to look for what you're searching" is a legit answer imo, especially in a highly dynamic situation like this, where yesterday's info can be stone old... but thats only my 2c worth.
In non verbal communication like a forum, sometimes the tone can seem harsher than intended, especially when the communication language is not everybodys native one

Whats killing me are ppl asking for info, but refuse to use sources themselves for silly reasons... i see the "E-mail adress affair" also being on the edge, but considering the ammount of spam that drizzels in my inbox every day, i am in a huge lot of email lists that are worse than Xaviers. He is trying to save the game we all like to play so much, so i would forgive him
And even if i wouldnt agree with his ideas, i'd still use the website to find out whats going on. But thats only a princess' way of doing things

Ok, don't ask, as-is, haven't seen in this thread. But this answer is a "don't ask, you stupid". At least for me. And I think we can finish this discussion. I think don't worth the effor for any of us...

That Ryzom.org site is cute, but for all the open-source calling that's on there I miss the most important issue: hosting.

Hosting is not free and the bandwidth needed for MMORPGs is not a triviality.

And if it is open source, who will be the 'official' Ryzom since by its nature it could fork infinitely, thereby shattering the community even further.
Also the main difference between tools/programs and a game is that in general the tools and programs are bound by algorithms, the only ways in which you typically can differentiate is by the UI. With a game you will suddenly get hordes of people with ideas, opinions and the like, a lot of which will be totally off-balance. A game needs a benevolent dictator that sets the setting and environment

Not to mention that the "When we will produce new components of the game, we will publish them under a Free Software licence compatible with the Debian definition." part of the social contract is laughable. If it is Ryzom that will be GPLd then by definition of adding those components to a GPLd Ryzom you are required to open up the rest as well.

Having been in the open source 'business' for over 8 years now I can only wonder how effective this will be.

Shameless plugs: use Subversion (subversion.tigris.org) and something like Trac (trac.edgewall.org) for the development if you manage to open source it.

About credability of ryzom.org, go there, read the infos, then make up your mind... (thats what i did)
that of course would require to do that without a readymade opinion based on rumours

If you look at what i said i had been there and I haven't seen any rumours I went to the site and it looked aweful i read it and it has a thermometer they are going to buy code

As i said it looks exactly like one of those private rip off sites making an attempt to get a game going and would NOT be the fate I would like ryzom to take. Private servers are horrible the code is buggy and they are usualy hand me down pc's run by amateurs. Nice jester but not interested in looking there for information about what will happen to this game thanks it gives me the shudders.

(i think i said this all before and yes i look here for news and so the comments that a person should go there for news about here are completely well silly...)

Ryzom.org is run on a server with limited resources (bandwidth, finances etc.) and as such serves its purpose. But (and this will be obvious to those that know the site), ryzom.org was mentioned on Slashdot, a site with several million daily users, where a large part of those are interested in GPL and related topics (ryzom.org wants to turn the game to GPL), and hence a lot of the /. users keep looking at the site (see the Slashdot effect). IF ryzom.org get the resources it need, it will improve (if really lucky they will get hosted freely by Sunsite or other helpful organisations).

hehe yes, but I think people are missing the point buying ryzom for a handful of euros or whatever and sticking it on a site like this really means its demise not its rebirth and I think its a horrible idea and an insult to the way the game is run now. Its like taking the code and playing with it and hopefully someone will get a computer or two running in their basement so we can play a hacked up code slapped together with glue by people using it as a hobby that will be laggy and buggy and not the ryzom we all know. I for one probably wouldn't even bother to going to the trouble or trying it. Tried one of those projects before it was aweful. NO real money and no real dedication just some hobbyists doing it for a project ack I just wish people would stop presenting it as the next best thing for ryzom cause its not. Its fun I have played with code from games but it wont be a nice smooth running game that is online 24/7 with new content and new ideas and tons of bug fixes etc it will be far from that

Im just going to point out again, for anyone reading these threads, the large majority of people posting have zero idea what they're talking about, and are basing their opinions on estimations, rumour, or - for the most part, nothing at all.

Not trying to burst your bubble, but thewy are not going to raise enough money, I do not cxare if they have the best ideas in the world, there are already financialy stable parties looking into Ryzom, sorry but ryzom.org is a bit late

Not trying to burst your bubble, but if negotiations with the larger companies fall through, ryzom will be sold for whatever they can get for it. Only time will tell. Im not even gunning for xavier to takeover, I'd much prefer some real money behind the game, but all this naysaying is getting right on my bodocs.
