I have always liked this game, and even paid for it for 10 months even though I wasn't playing
I think having "sides" is a good idea; and having to work up in faction fame is a good idea for getting preferential treatment, as in TP spots.
However, neutrals should be able to use anyone's TP ports, but may have to pay a lot more for it. Like health insurance, a faction can save you a lot of money, but you can still get health care if you are willing to pay for it even without insurance.
So, let neutrals use all TP's, with greatly expanded costs (50K or 100K per use). Or let neutrals run fame errands that lower the cost for one faction, and increase the cost for the other. Want to use the Kami port in FG? then:
- become a Kami and use it for cheap
- pay an arm and a leg to use it
- run some Kami fame missions, and use it for just an arm OR a leg but the Kara TP is now both arms and both legs LOL
If you just ran some Kara fame missions (and are still neutral), then it will cost more to use the Kami port, or you have to run more Kami missions to lower the cost.
I like PvE much more than PvP, and I would also suggest that PvE "factions" be implemented. So a certain large tribe is a NPC faction, and you can have them remember you as a friend or an enemy.

Re: I came back, I tried, I saw and I cancelled
ive just started playing, and think some of the aspects of this game are fantastic,
shame to see people leave who obviously know it far better than i do
what am i going to find out later that is depressing some of the SoR vets? realisitcally that i dont know now?
i like the system and exp, espcially llike the stanza ideas and teh AI mobs, laid back leveling, pvp coming with experience and the weird mix of magic and tech.
(bugbear: the crafting quests at the start sucked away some of my hard earned crafting points, the evil swine for little reward!)

Though it was always intended that the saga focus around a battle between the Kami and Karavan (with the added fight against the Kitin), upon the game's release many of the aspects setting up this scenario were not implemented. Thus, many long-time players were introduced to a game that really didn't revolve around Kami/Karavan issues and we were lulled into a peaceful existence among all homin. Every player had access to every available tp - there was no way to register a factional alignment, so tp's were not factional in any respect. PvP was introduced (in PR only, I think) initially. I can't remember in which order the tags and OPs were introduced.
Due to the fact that PvP/cult alignment was not important at Ryzom's release, I feel Nevrax was short-sighted in not considering the possibility of a third side. However, I think the introduction of a third side is complicated by the fact that many call themselves neutral for very different reasons. Some are anti-pvp, some are agnostic, some are hominists. I would think this makes it quite difficult for Nevrax to determine how to introduce this and instead they've left it up to the players to develop this aspect.
I would not be in favour of a ruleset forcing sides. Though it seems tenuous at times, I think overall one of the most interesting aspects of Ryzom is our freedom to make choices with our game. We have the ability to chose any available skill and to change mid-stream if we decide we want to pursue something new (I would hate to be limited to doing melee all the time simply because I chose that at the start). We have the freedom to chose our political alignments (ie, I am a Matisian Kamist who was previously agnostic/neutral). I would hate being told I have to be Karavan simply because I've made a Matisian character. It may get complicated at times, but I think that's one of the reasons you still see beta-players around.
Great, great points and thank you for the perspective.
To sum things up for whoever on the dev team keeps track of the boards: The BEST thing about Ryzom is the open world, the open growth and the open POLITICAL environment. As such, don't alienate any segment of the player factions. My 2 dappers.

I am sorry to see you go but good luck to you wherever you land. The rest of my comments here are directed to those who are staying because we love this game, no matter what its flaws, real or imagined.
I call no one whiners although I do get sick of this debate sometimes. I discount no one's opinion unless it descends into a personal attack on the person making it. What I continue to find troublesome in these debates is the "I only see it from my point of view" comments. There are other points of view that do not include "not all teleporters are accessible to neutrals so therefore the game is flawed" and that "there is only PvP content available to players and therefore the game is flawed".
My take on the neutral position is that there should be a penalty for not choosing to be factioned. If you choose to be neutral in a faction war why should you have unlimited access to every tp controlled by either faction? Those of us, on either side, who have chosen a faction, pay a heavy price in the contemptible way we are treated on this forum as if by choosing to take part in the story we have been given makes us less important to the continued success of this game than others.
I would not say the same of those who have choosen to be neutral and neither would I say that everyone who engages in OP battles is immature, insensitive, children, or just "having fun because there's nothing else to do". Ask a true Karavaneer or a true kami whether or not the price we've paid to be either is "fun" and you'll be surprised at the answers. These choices from all of us broke up guilds, got players banned for life, separated old friends who still play from each other and caused a lot to leave.
That we debate over it is good, there should be honest and heartfelt debate but why the anger? Life changes those who live it, so why wouldn't life on Atys be ever evolving and ever changing as well?
If you choose not to associate ingame with people who have taken a stance within a faction, so be it, because you are missing some good friends on either side. If you choose a faction and don't want to associate with the other side or with neutrals, so be it, because, once again, you are missing good friends in every choice.
If you choose to believe that there is no other content except PvP or PvE, then you have really missed what Atys is all about. If you choose to believe that those people you see tagged up, either Karavan or kami, are continously engaged in PvP, then you are sadly mistaken.
The above comments are not directed at any one individual so don't go there with this. I am simply presenting a different point of view to be considered.
These are my opinions, they don't have to be yours. No offense is intended and my apologies in advance if any is taken.

Re: I came back, I tried, I saw and I cancelled
Though I'm new and most likely wrong, I can see a possible advantage to being neutral once Ryzom Ring is released. After all, with user created missions and content, and neutral having little or no guidance or support from Nevrax, isn't it conceivable that player-created neutral content would have a higher likilihood of being incorporated into the grand scheme of things? Killing a boss faster because the TP is nearby is great and all, but having your mission be made official? Much, much cooler IMHO.

Re: I came back, I tried, I saw and I cancelled
I'm more PvE than PvP always have been - just for the record
All I will say is the game was advertised as having a PvP element from the start, I purchased a copy of SoR in Oct 2004 and it said there was PvP ingame. It was not present at release and for quite sometime afterwards.
I came back to this game resently no longer interested in the PvE/PvP arguements or discussions if you prefer to call them that.
I came back to this game to accept a good game for what it is and how it is at present, if there are changes i'm willing to adapt to those changes just like we have to in real life.
There are a lot of new people starting where these old 'discussions' will be nothing but a history lesson and of no real consequence to them.

It was mentioned but it was not the central focus.troll16 wrote:I'm more PvE than PvP always have been - just for the record

A lot of the lore appears to have... well 'changed' for want of a better word, from how it appeared at the start.
The original set up was much more cooperative, the history gave a lot of common cause and the initial development of the game - within the game - did not suggest that PvP would become as 'essential' as it has become, and been pushed.
There's a difference between saying there'll be PvP and turning it into a far more central element.

Re: I came back, I tried, I saw and I cancelled
Hi all im still around and reading the forums when i remember to.
Just thought I'd say hi to Een and also make my own little contribution...
My most fond memories are pre server merge when there was a time of less pvp and more pve.Im not saying i dont like the americans cos i met some great people after the merge, its just that my pve experience was always better than the pvp.
I think focus needs to be drawn away from the pvp (im not saying remove it) and more focus is needed on the pve.
But then what do i know... im not around too much anymore!
PS, anyone know when the next RL meet is? There is a bunch of you i still want to meet, and that includes you Rushin!!!
