Maybe there is a success percentage like other skills and when u fail to get that it leads you astray, or maybe as Petej said some spots are just broken/bugged. Whichever it is it works well enough to be considered useful still i think.
very simply put...
tracker lead you to 100x100 area.. north/west/east/south
side of that area.
there is 10000 possible source spots.
not all are filled with every type of mat in that area and some can be empty spots.
prospect will randomly choose spot depending on your range and angle (both which will be random numbers also).
if that spot happens to be empty, you get "No mats in this area", if it's different grade or differen mat type, you get other errors.
if you happen to be at 0x0, prospecting with 10m, 0 angle (0 east, 90 north, etc) and mat happens to be 10x10 spot, you fail your prospect.
if you use 360 angle, 10m (and lets assume it will cover 10x10 area), you may fail your prospect, or you may get lucky and hit 10x10 spot and pop your source.
and i say it again,
tracking/prospecting works, there is just too many random elements involved, so you may think that it's broken.
it does not take all the specific mat source location in your range/angle area and pop 10 sources randomly from them.
first it does the random thing, then it checks if there is any mat sources where random landed, and then it shows you fail message if needed.

I be glad it werks fer ya, I rilly do. Dat ain true fer alla us tho, as acknowledged by de spirits o' support when we prayed to dem.

ahh, that the same bug as sneaking thru loria then (some can do it at lvl0 some cant even do it at lvl 250)
i suppose these kinds of bugs are hard to locate and fix by devs.

I enjoy harvesting in different ways depending on different moods.
I'm feeling chatty, I go to one of my usual spots, and do some gentle digging and catching up with everyone online. Having a CP preferred. The fun is social.
I'm feeling productive, I turn up to aggro digs, and spend my whole time clicking cps and making sure my two-stage switch is timed perfectly, only hitting sources with enough content to support me, etc etc. The fun is like a mini-game of clicking, key pressing and timing.
Feeling semi-adventurous, usually comes after doing one of the earlier for a bit. I'll feel the piles of choice aren't enough so I throw out an excellent tracking and run off into the wilderness to see what I can find. The fun is finding new mat spots and seeing new areas of Atys.
Feel very adventurous (and greedy) I head to Nexus and after hitting my normal "easy" spots run into the real wild tracking any sup or excellent I can find. Much DP ensues, as does much entertainment. The fun is exhilaration of mob dodging and really big rewards (sups) for the effort.
And if I'm in the mood to really level, I'll go to PR and work some fast levels, often looking for excellents while I'm at it. In GoO it's fun to run around feeling all powerful compared to GoC or Nexus, hehe. Makes tracking easier but less entertaining. After some time down there I'll craft up some shiny HQ black and white medium armor sets for the market (that rarely sell.) The fun is taking a step down from the intensity of higher level regions, relaxing, easy levels, and crafting special stuff.
That being said, of course there are times when I want none of it and go off hunting. But I generally thoroughly enjoy the many faces of harvesting.

I suppose those who want to powerlevel digging do that. Using the mull example its actually not that good a spot, there is a low percentage of choice/excellent mats there, well the resins good round the back i guess.

In my opinion, something that is broken cannot be enjoyed as main activity very well. Ranged is somewhat fun if it is an occasional side activity, but fun part lacks when you practice it as your main combat skill. Is there more than one who has been using ranges as main skill?

Off topic reply
mmatto wrote:And sheer number of mats required for leveling crafting should be reduced to make it faster than it is now (especially armor/jewels) and to counter any effect that might slow advancement because of my other suggestions (nerfs).
I crafts mostly armor, though I gots plans fer all types o' gear. I mebbe wrong, but I belief dat ya gits 100xp per mat fer craftin, say a Q210 at level 200, an' ya gits up to 300xp per mat fer craftin at 50+ yer level, say Q250 fer level 200, regardless o' wot yer craftin'.

Also off topic. I think that sweet spot for crafting xp something like 30 over your level because of smaller number of degrades and higher quality of average degrade (not sure about latter though). Number of mats required is still insane for 5 additional armor crafting branches
