When I started playing this game this time around, I had plans of making Sui fall into the depths of what the Guild of Elias was, as I was interested in discovering that for myself. This has been why some of my posts have refered to my "adoptive father".. However, as things have ramped up quite a bit, I have to totally redo my storyline, which is kinda wreakin havoc, but quite fun. It's interesting to have this character prepared to go one direction, then pulling a full 180 from that even before it really began. All because he was raised Matis and has to follow the edicts of his ubringing (which I don't like, but am having fun researching).
Anyway, my point is, to those folks that want peace, by all means do so. But give us folks that are feeding off the story something to chew on. Remember that your character is affected by the events and the possible threat to their lives. They may strive for peace, but even that will have to be fought for at this point (not really, but I'd imagine that would be the thoughts of many in this situation). Besides, as you think these things out and describe your characters reactions, obviously it's giving many of us (I would even imagine the game creators) alot to think about and alot of fun...
heh.. this has been a good place to hang my hat for the last few weeks

Thanks for the fun, may it continue through the impending appocolypse (where's my sandwich board?? "The end is Nigh!")

But it's not just about being a hero. It's also that we, the players behind the characters, all believe that the 'right thing' to do would be being against this war. It's difficult to make your character act in a way you know to be wrong. And not only that, doing so turns your character into a person you'll probably not like. And who could have fun playing a character they despise?
That's how we're expected to respond, yet the majority holds by the "I fight for hominkind only, Jena and Ma-Duk should stay out of our lives" opinion. I'm glad some persons stand by that 'least compelling' opinion, as without them we'd have only the CSR characters and NPCs acting in the 'expected' way. Doesn't make much sense for the whole population to suddenly abandon their religion, does it? Though I agree the most interesting positions are the ones strugling between their loyalty to their gods and their loyalty to their people.
(I'm not trying to tell anyone what role they should play. Everyone should do as they like. In fact, I'm trying to say that whatever position you choose, you always add something to the world.)
Edit as I missed this one:
Yes, my point exactly. We need some people doing what they're supposed to do too, it's more interesting that having everyone abandon Jena/Ma-Duk in favor of peace. As you said, the story needs everything.
