As far as I know, the jewels can just "compensate" that -25, that is, the resits cannot be higher than your highest (combat?) level:
x = max(melee, magic .. maybe craft and dig too)
l = x-25 your natural resist
q = jewel qual
r = min(max(q,l), x)
Please correct me if I am wrong

I guess that with jewels resistance is equal to your highest lvl (including foraging & crafting). This is based on petej's observation of resist 250. He has forage&jewelry level 250 but highest combat around 160.

Hmmm so -
Base resist lvl = Highest Combat branch -25
Max resist lvl = Jewel quality capped by your highest lvl in ANY branch
lol been trying to upload a screenshot of my A and P windows (without success -having probs compressing the image to a reasonable size without losing the info) , id always thought max resist was purely determined by the jewel quality but then my highest lvl has always been above or equal to the jewels i could craft (or buy).
