lol browser, you're more patient than I. I uninstalled it after half an hour. Took longer to install than to play and delete together.

I'm installing LOTRO. I had played the trial back in December but I thought I would give it a more serious try.
Who's playing in LOTRO now and what's your nickname ? Mine is the same.
Are there any guild composed of Ryzom players only ?

browserice wrote:I am currently playing Rapelz (because I am curious to see what kind of free MMORPG game it is). I have moved on to the continent and left the newbie island. I have only been on the continent for about 1 hour and I am disapointed. The MOBs even standing 1 feet away from you, don't even attack you. At one time I was attacking one and another one was just standing there doing nothing 2 feet away from his partner I was bashing on. Surroundings look a bit boring and with not much scenary.
I get the feeling this game is just a "go kill X amount of ennemy Z".
I'm giving myself one week to decide if I dump it or not.
Alot of people have tried and got bored of Rappelz pretty quickly. I'm playing it and have been for a while and still really like it.
It is mainly all about having pets and using them in a smart way for their healing, buffs, tanking ability or outright damage. You do have to go kill x amount of whatever mobs for your missions but even in Ryzom I can't count how many hundreds of Kara npc bandits I had to kill to turn myself -99 Kami to +60 Kami so it's similar if missions are the route you want to take.
The early mobs don't have much aggro and they aren't for the most part social, but that's only in the very early levels and as you progress most of them end up with a very large aggro range and some are so social you can't touch the mobs unless you have a full team to take care of adds.
It's mostly a game about playing alongside with and rasing in level your pets and then trading them. As for levelling, you can and should take the mission route of levelling maybe levels 0-30 because alot of the rewards give not only exp but also key items that can't be easily found or bought later on. After lvl 30 though most people level in 'dungeon partys' with several team members, Healer, Buffer, damage dealer, tank etc to a party. It's also a game though that can be soloed depending on how good or high level a pet you have.
Rappelz has an excellent economy though- with the aid on an 'evil' cash shop that's available -and I often spend a great deal of time not really playing at all, only going around people's stores and the auction house buying and selling items and pets.
I like the game alot and found that the longer I played, the more I got into it and saw it was bigger with more things to do than I first thought.
Kodel.

Regarding LOTRO, I didn't really take to it, the quest structure makes it hard to get teams and once a quest is done the team members tend to bugger off and the team disintegrates and the whole cycle has to be repeated.
Wheras in Ryzom, a team would grind for hours together, building frindships along the way.
By the time you get to the higher levels (cap is 50 atm), you are playing on the ugliest map ever created and by the time you get to the final questing area (GF), you sort ask yourself..... "is that it?"
You can of course farm the higher level instances repeatedly, but it wasn't that appealing to me.
A good Ryzomer grinder could get a couple of characters to 50 in a few month, without breaking a sweat.
If you really want to make the game last and be less of a chore, you would need to join a really good guild, ideally an ex-ryzom one as mentioned above.
Regarding servers, I hated Laurelin and found the people less than helpful, but I only met three ryzom players there and two of them transferred to Snowbourn shortly afterwards.
But on saying that, it is a really good game while it lasts
If the guilds on Laurelin are not to your liking, I could get you into The Last Alliance on Snowbourn, although I dont play anymore, I do recommend them thoroughly, they are the oldest guild on the server, full of great people and all levels are catered for.
Have fun in Middle Earth

I've tried LOTRO, even bought it. Wild horses can't force me to log in again. There is a fun rant on
Team Spirit's forums that I agree with. Unfortunately. LOTRO doesn't have anything to do with (my experience of) Tolkien's books.
I'm beginning to suspect I've been playing the wrong genre of games for way too long. Basically since Neverwinter Nights was released for Linux in 2003, I think. I played RPGs for world, story and immersion - when most RPGs really have been about strategic combat. I'm not very strategic and NWN2's campaign was a pain.
MMORPGs are even worse in many ways, with their "get me X of Y" missions, though the multiplayer aspect can bring immersion to the game. Sometimes. When I started playing Ryzom 2005 there was still some hope that the main Saga would continue and that idea suited me perfectly. A living breathing world, an interesting evolving storyline. Too bad it never really happened.
So recently I played some nice single player adventure games (yeah, the "dead" point & click genre): Paradise, The Longest Journey and the excellent Dreamfall and enjoying myself very much. Not that I can solve all, or even most, puzzles without a walkthrough...
So, my question to to this beautiful community is: do you know any other really really great story based games?
