I don't understand the obsessive need to keep comparing them. EQ, WoW, Ryzom and every other thing out there have their strengths and weaknesses and have their ideas and plots that appeal. Each will have people who adore them and have been waiting their entire lives for this kind of game, each will have people who loathe it on sight.
Ryzom is not and never has ever been a threat to those giants. I don't think anyone ever intended it to be one. People will like it and stay, or hate it and leave... or... judging by some of the unregistered posts, *really* hate it and stay anyway. That's another thing I don't understand. "I hate this game and not only should it fail, it *must* fail". Guys, just hate it and go find something you like doing. It doesn't hurt you that people are still playing the game.
Or, if you want something done, make *constructive* comments. Nevrax screwed up big time with patch one and really unbalanced aspects of the game. Some people gave it two days and quit in disgust. Some gave it a week and quit. Others stayed and waited it out.
However, in subsequent patches they have restored harvesting to a manageable level (my team-mate pulls q170 mats, I am around q110). Crafting is as it ever was, except it goes faster now with the mats influx (I have crafting to q110 in heavy/light armour, 2-hand weapons and amps and have raised a combined total of nearly 50 levels since patch 1). The caster's amp bug has been fixed. Melee is very doable solo if one is careful. The world is a more dangerous place. It ain't just a patch note anymore. Healers got their heals doubled in strength, offensive mages got some higher skills too. Solo mages are still unbalanced. They are not very doable at this time and hopefully that will be fixed. The vendor system is very nice *and* it has inventory bugs that will hopefully also get worked on.
The worst of the problems have been toned down, in my opinion. A lot of the complaints about the game are that combat is too fast, and it can be. When I doued before patch, my healer would often sit for long stretches during the combat and now he has to speed heal. That makes combat very challenging on occasion if we push ourselves to the highest we can take (which is currently about 30 levels higher than us as a pair).
Nevrax should never have released that patch, especially since many of the problems with the patch were posted by testers a week or more before the patch went live. Experience is a harsh teacher and one hopes they know better next time. On the flip side, the in game support has been amazing. I've reported minor bugs/suggestions and have had a GM respond most every time. In fact, I've started writing 'no response needed' on some of my reports just to make sure they don't waste their time. I've received emails from the GMs following up on things and had them help out in big ways.
The game was released incomplete. Very true as well. I can't speak to why they would do that and I said the same thing at the end of beta. If the game is released as is, it is very incomplete. On the flip side, I'm making friends, levelling up and doing the minor tasks while waiting for the main story to start. We get hints at it with the events like the shocking events in Pyr today. I and many others won't wait forever, but for now, I'm dealing.
Some people won't, and I can understand their concerns. All I can say is to echo the other players. Play it, try it. You may like it, you may not. Give it a shot and make your own decision.
