Here are some answers.
Error Code 53: This simply means you are not able to access the shard you are attempting to access. This is generally due to lack of credit card verification or the process is not finished.
$1 / 1 Euro Charge: There is no $1 charge. This is only a verification amount. In order to see if the card is valid, we "ping" it for $1. This verification is then cancelled. The trial is free.
The trial isn't free!: It is absolutely free, other than the time it will take you to download the client. Asking for a credit card is a qualifier, and not forcing you to pay for anything. Ryzom is a subscription based game and would therefore require a valid payment source to play. Currently, that is a credit or debit card.
Other Payment Types: We are always looking into other methods for payment and access to the game. This doesn't mean it will happen tomorrow, but we are always reviewing the possibility. Remember, bank check cards work as well.
