I think it all falls back to how you were "brought up" in the game. My biggest excitement in game was that first night we actually managed to reach Dyron. After weeks of playing, and no vets to lead, we actually made it to Dyron .... wow a new region, finally reached thru hard work, skill development, and searching out various routes. Congratulations abounded as other players finally realized, "Yes, getting to another town is in reach".
And that sense of wonder was repeated when we actually made it to Thesos and after a few months the portals opened and we entered an entirely new region where we were completely and immediately wiped. So we kept trying, grabbed a few more levels, tried afew more routes and finally made it down the ramp into Matis.
The wonder was repeated when Tryker land opened up and a few of us actually made it to the Lakelands. When the ganme went "retail" we had to do it all over again but the sense of discovery stuck. Contrast this to the new player who sits in SIlan to level 50, arrives in a home city and then is sheparded around all regions and has all TP's in the first week. It all goes by in a blur and there's no opportunity for sidetrips as the trek leaders are on a mission to complete the trek in as short a time as possible so they can get back to what they were doing.
And then we have cats. While I would like to see them retained for crafting usage, I would be quite happy if they were disabled for everything else. With three guildies working out of team, and a stack of cats, a new player can be at level 100 in days. Even playing solo, when ya blast out 140 levels (101-171 x two trees) in a weekend, the regular "every day progression" pales by comparison.
It's much easier to appreciate something you have earned than something that was handed to you. Want the excitement of a challenge ? Solo trek Loria north to south, try and take on big mobs with two man teams.
In short, the key to enjoying end game content is not blowing by all the content on ya way there.
