F2P forever?
Re: F2P forever?
Ryzom is Arguably a superb game by all rights. It boasts a very supportive legacy community, complexity in goals and play styles, open ended character development, and a unique aesthetic / storyline which are all good selling points.
However, it's previous business failure(s), wide spread client crashes/compatibility issues, steep learning curve, dated graphics complexity in comparison to a wealth of newer P2P competitors on the market, are potentially strong detractors to subscribers.
When taken into consideration that the owner (licensee, host, whatever) of Ryzom is completely anonymous, that automatically precludes the possibility of giving them my personal/billing information. Offering a service people will eventually pay for is not like switching out the coffee secretly in a restaurant to observe the results and sell your brand. It requires complete accountability through every step of the process.
As it stands today, I believe the negatives outweigh the positives. I will continue to enjoy the trial, and hope the balance of factors become more favorable.

First of all I would like to tell everyone that the original owners, Nevrax, was very good at communicating. That was perhaps their best feature, so this hush hush style of the last owner and the present one wasn't always the Ryzom way.
Second, the free trial system for new players, and no charge asked from anyone to play makes sense at the moment. And if there will be no further development of the game, it's probably better if it stays this way.
Try calculating how much old players have paid during their subscription period, and you will find they have put a rather huge amount into a game that hardly developed. And that's a far cry from how it was advertised.
We waited, got unpatient and asked for new content, got some and then waited another long period... And we keep asking, and we even throw in some suggestions.
How will it be this time around? Who knows, and if anyone knows *looks in the direction of the admin*, it doesn't seem we will be told anything until it's "ready"

Re: F2P forever?
I don't really mind if the game becomes F2P. It opens the game to a wider audience, and personally, I don't have the money to spend a monthly fee on something like this.
Re: F2P forever?
Maybe they are going to try a none conventional model for payment. Few indy MMO (e.g. puzzle pirates) do that.
