This looks like a possible solution:
Tag all rewards from R2 scenarios so that they can only be used on the giver's shard. If the scenario is built by an Arispotle person, and the reward is from Arispotle, then that reward can only be used on Arispotle.
Inter-shard scenarios can still be done, but the rewards would have to come from the correct shard. So, Cho and Arispotle people can participate, and any rewards from the Arispotle side can be used only on Arispotle, and rewards that came from Cho could only be used on the Cho shard.
This implies that multiple people could contribute rewards, from multiple servers, and those rewards go back to be used on their respective servers.

That's a good question.

I have an idea.
Let's just make it socially unacceptable.
:-p

A very good question indeed. And quite frankly, if Nevrax expects enough people will be interested in R² to establish a new server (pending), then there truly isn't a need for inter-shard scenarios to provide more scenarios for player enjoyment... is there?
I certainly understand the need for a good community, but I can't speak German or French, so it is impossible for me to interact with much more than Arispotle. I hunt with Arispotle players, because that is my chosen server. While I share in the general Ryzom community as a Ryzom player... my true community here is based on my server.
Having had no interaction with anyone from another server... I personally would not lose out if Nevrax close down the cross-shard Ring connections.
I know from discussions with players and chat in /region (and /universe) that people are heavily trading cross shard now.
If this is going to be common practice, just merge all of the servers and be done with it.

I can smell a major rollback to september 2004.

Please forgive the posting of this link in both threads which refer to this issue, but it is possible some are following one, and not the other.
Looks like the intershard transfer of mats/cats/gear from one server cannot be traded to another server after patch tomorrow while Nevrax reviews the issue. Scenario specific items created with the R² editor are tradable to allow for inter-shard participaton in scenarios.

Interesting, well that temp fix is pretty much exactly how I thought it was going to be and how it should remain. Make it permanent.

We are headed for a problem here...
Cho will open soon.
New players will swarm to it. They will grow and prosper, and that is fine.
Older players will be in Aris. We will age and dwindle...that is not so fine.
Eventually, the population will not be large enough to support two servers, and we will have to merge servers again.
In and of itself, not a big problem. But how shall we resolve outposts? There would be no end of the complaining if it were all set back to zero, and two guilds can't own the same place at the same time.
Cho is a bad idea.

Well, for the addition of another server, it is my hope that Nevrax has a few tricks up their sleeves in addition to R² to boost population enough to support the two servers.
