Some good information here for someone who just started playing the game trying to get a feel for stuff.

One thing Olepi left off the list for most mmorpgs.. Raiding.

I don't see it mentioned anywhere, but it does seem to play an important part of most MMORPGs. It's usually guilds getting all their members together to kill some very power mob. I haven't heard it mentioned at all. Honestly, I have no interest in raiding as it is in most current mmorpgs, but I am curious about the kitin (sp?) swarm attacks. Is this something guilds participate in, or is this everyone who is on the server when the attack takes place?
Raiding is usually "boss" raiding, where the group goes out hunting for particular high level boss mobs. This is still just fighting in the traditional sense, just harder :) Usually a guild team that does this.

Kitin swarm attacks are special events that are put on by the GM's. It is usually everyone that wants to participate.
Also something I would like to know more about is FvF. Is this like RvR? I never played DAoC, but I heard they were a lot of fun.
In Ryzom, you can "tag" yourself to be available for fighting other people. In DAOC, you are automatically "tagged" whenever you venture into a PvP type zone. I think DAOC has the best PvP setup.
My first impressions in the 2 days I have played...

Great crafting setup! I am still a bit confused on the harvesting part though... I see how it is involved and requires your attention and you have ways to counter a bad hit to one of the pools, but I have no clue how to find the mat I need. I am hoping there will be better ways to find them then the 50m fine quality.
Yes, there are lots of improvements to prospecting, like looking for specific type mats (oil, for example), and specific qualities (like choice oil).
Fighting has been a challenge so far. I am getting used to what I can and can't do. I haven't decided what area I want to focus in yet. I hear that you can do everything, but what really happens when your out fighting in a group?
It is very similar to other MMORPG's in team play, except you first need to organize who does what. Since everyone can do everything, people need to pick their role in each fight. It is very common to first go for a melee and heal improvements, and let the offensive magic follow later. Even a lvl 50 healer can help out on a team with 150's.
I imagine that people do not do everything even if the trees are open to them. For example, you have people that focus on healing and others who might focus on melee fighting and taunting? If you have two offensive mages, will they have the same skills or will they have a different customized set of skills?
They will probably have similar skills. Mobs are resistant to certain skills, so Cold damage is used for one type, Rot damage for another, Elec for another, etc. To be effective you would need decent levels in all of these things. There are also DoT (damage over time) spells for each type. And, for each spell, you can set the stanzas up differently; for example, I never use time credits, since I want my spells to cast as fast as possible. I therefore use more sap and life credits. I also don't like range credits. So I probably have basically the same skills as another offensive mage, but I cast faster and farther, at greater cost to sap and life.
As for the ring expansion.. That almost sounds like an instanced type of event that players can create with a builders pack kind of like Oblivion's construction set. Is this true? When you enter a ring, is it just your group or is it anyone who is on at the time? Do you have to do it at a set time or can you enter it anytime?
Yes, the Ring is instanced areas created with a constructor set. It has the standard triggers, sequences, etc. Currently, you MUST be in the instance yourself for anyone else to enter. Eventually these instanced scenarios will be independent of any player.

Been playing for a while. Very pretty and people are very nice. The quest or missions really need to be worked on. Finding people is a nightmare sometimes. I was told many times to find someone. But no where did it show me or point me and I had to search on my little map then go there and run every where. I have found no matter what lvl I am fighting something I will hit good for a few times then I get resist or failure. It was fun at the start.. I thought WOW you do these quest and some were hard you get really nice stuff. Then I found its was only there. And please dont compaire this to other online games. Unless I am wrong 4 servers and some act like this is a huge hit. Its not. Just get a life if you pay this just to see your friends. Thats why we have MSN, ICQ and such. Just how I see the game. I am glad others like it and enjoy it.

A short addition to Olepi's comparison list:

Something I really like that is unusual relates to the many
skill lines one can grow - which means that there is likely
a skill I can use with teams of most any level. I can
team with people from 50 on up by chosing the right
skill.
In most games, there is just no way to team with new
or intermediate level players once you get to a high level.

I'm sure this has been stated a thousand times....but oh well, I never seem to see these types posts soon enough. I have been in ryzom for about a month and an half now. So you could say I'm a bit new here still. Ryzom strikes me more of an incredible atmosphere for exploring and meeting other people. Even on the island, there are many roleplayers that have been a treat to meet. Some were wanting nothing more thant to grind, but I have found that when I grind and get to the "end game", I've rushed through the journey...and feel I have missed something.

So my suggestions: 1) Look about for a guild that seems in your line of play, as we all really do approach any game differently.

2) Explore the island some, perhaps take your time with each of the quests. I was on the island for almost the majority of the time I've been in Ryzom, and enjoyed meeting all the different people.

3) Find your chars voice...who do you want to be? And go from there..

Hope to see you in Atys.

Putting aside any other comments on the game, I find it odd that you compare Ryzom to WoW (in a manner that implies you prefer the WoW type quest-driven game) and then tell everyone reading your post not to compare Ryzom to other games. ;)

Edited-I think I misinterpreted your WOW to mean the game, but on second reading, I think you mean, "WOW, the noob island quests had great rewards" and not "WOW (the game) had great quest rewards." My bad-though your grammar is, er, less than clear. :)
