Larsa and Ikshar have it right.
SoR is a lot like RL - it is what you make of it. I enjoy the thrill of the hunt - as a harvester and explorer. I've been wandering around Newbie Isle for 4-5 days [~20hrs playing time] just gathering what i happen to find, developing the skills to find things more efficiently-territorial clues as well as "bricks" in game, and helping out newer newbies.
Anyone who is "bored" here is "bored" of RL because they need to be told what to do, they can't think for themselves. It is the open ended nature of SoR that makes it so much better than other MMORPGs. CoH has great costume customization, but confines you to classes with x skills - here you can learn every skill in the game given enough time.
The population is low? Maybe...but there's little or no camping [except kipee on Newbie Isle and maybe a few named mobs on mainland] and no KS or PK or other griefers [until Unregistered decides that trolling isn't enough fun and breaks down and buys a copy...]
Bottom Line: Great game for people who don't mind thinking for themselves

Well, I went out and got my copy and have managed to do some playtesting. Current thoughts are as follows...

Difficult to learn initially. It does need a bit more direction and assistance to start, as I spent more time than I'd like trying to figure things out when I first started. Once I did pick things up, I started going pretty fast in my training (even if harvesting post 10 kicks my butt - BOOM).

Crafting seems a bit difficult for the extremely low success rate. What enhances success? A stat? Simple levels in the skill? I dunno...

Magic I've been kind of both ways on. I want to build my character to have good magic skills as well as offense, but we'll see how that ends up later down the road. Seriously hoping they enhance the power of medium armor before it becomes too important for me.

My personal goal right now is to defeat one of those bloody kitin. Ye gods those things are tough, and their roars scare the hell out of me when I'm wandering around in the wilderness. Amuses me when half of a botos herd decides I look interesting and they all rush over to low at me. Hah, at least I'm a nice guy and don't hunt them unless specifically on a mission or need crafting parts.

The game itself does feel a lot like EQ, which to me isn't necessarily good. Does combat ever become any more interesting, or is it pretty much just engage and make certain you have your next attack qeued up? Found myself falling asleep at the keyboard last night during harvesting. It'd also be nice if Nevrax would set up control packs for people coming from other games like AC2 did (EQ, DAoC, and a few others I think are there as auto presets). I'm very, very familiar with AC2's keyboard setup and fully intend to completely remap my keyboard when I'm comfortable with the game.

I'm really hoping they fix Ranged combat, I'd love to pack some pistols but we all know that just isn't viable right now.

Ambience in game is excellent, I rather enjoy wandering around even if the newbie areas are bloody small. Didn't take me long to find the 'edge of the world' as it is, where I keep hearing something extremely large walking around or something. That thing has to be MASSIVE to make those kinds of sounds...

Ah yes, for the record, I play Matis. I wish I could get myself to like Zorai as they're much more my style, but I really don't like how they're proportioned as well as their general appearance.

Any hints/tips for someone in newbieland from those of you more experienced perhaps?
