For example the very first mission you get when you talk to the welcome person says "talk to person X"
Now, in the little chat bubble the welcomer tells you where to find the person, they're the fight trainer. But in the mission info you get from presisng j, all it says is "talk to x" There is ABSOLUTELY NO MENTION of where he is.
The mission text isn't put into the chat window, but normal stuff NPCs say is.
The best help I've seen so far in missions is "take a package to person A in city B" and that's the extent of the help you get. No idea if person A is a guard, a trainer, a merchant.. nothing.
You could always try this:
http://ballisticmystix.com/npcFinder.jsp
or this:
http://ryzom.raum.com/?t=itemdb&s=npcs&menu=
Both are very useful and will help you locate a lot of the NPCs. Bear in mind that the location on the map may be a general one, some NPCs (particularly scouts) move around a bit.

altho you are right about "so.. now what?" feeling in missions, some missions (starter one and some rites so far actually) will put landmark on your map and/or put npc name in compass "Mission" menu.
... but like all other cool stuff in Ryzom, it's done quietly

Lol you'll laugh when I say that my new computer is a new Intel Core Duo 17" iMac! I have a 25gb partition that I run games on. Finally I have the best of both worlds!

Elij, that's what I run actually, haha. I have a Macbook Pro 2.16 ghz with 1 gig of ram (I really need to upgrade to 2). My windows and OS X partitions are 25 gigs each and I have a 250 gig external HD for storage, hehe.
And philu. The only reason you can look up quests is because people have been doing them for over a year. What happens when new quests come out. There won't be any website to go look off of, everyones going to be equally confused and lost.
Besides that, you shouldn't have to rely on external websites just to advance in a game. That's bad design.

Wow that's nice! I waited and waited for the new consumer MacBook, hoping it would have a decent GPU for Ryzom. No such luck.

Yeah, the normal Macbook they just released uses integrated video I think... it's great for non-gaming applications. Even the Pro that I have I'm a little upset with, it only has an X1600, even though the X1900 was out at the time.
Personally, I would have rather they used the nVidia 7900 mobile chip, I really don't like ATI.

Thanks for the replies and tips. Not playing right now, but I will be this evening. Think one of my largest problems with being so lost in this game is that I'm coming from playing a scout in EQ2 and I'm so used to tracking and waypoints, lol.

When new quests come out ...

... we will get on and do them like philu and everyone else did in the first place, yippee

Philu was only pointing out that if you're fed up and can't be bothered to complete a mission yourself then some information is available on such sites. You don't have to look it up, and the tasks are not critical to advancement in the game.
I would tend to say "why should there be an ingame memory for your character? When you're given an important task why don't you just pay attention in the first place, or if you know you're scatter brained and flighty, write it down or tie a piece of fiber round your finger?" It's a role-playing game, live your character.
There are no ingame consequences for failing a mission or simply not completing it. Only you might end up carrying a bag full of lost packages and letters and so on

I did, hehe. I think every single task after the first one can be picked up again from the original mission giver anyway. This may be different for the rites but I doubt it.

Okay, give me the ability to take notes in game. Do you honestly expect me to remember a little dialog box I read days later? Quest logs ARE your characters memory. The fact that mission text isn't even put down in the chat window like everything else an NPC says is just adding insaul to injury. The mission system in ryzome is probably the worst I've ever seen, I think even Lieage 2's was better. Does it make it a challenge? Yes. Will it drive away new players? Probably. Will it ever get fixed? Probably not.

I love Ryzom's mission system. If I wanted quests like EQ2 (or take your pick of whatever MMO supposedly has a good quest system) has, I'd play a single-player adventure game.
