I generally frown upon a game that has no PvP - it's an endgame goal for me.
Sure, most PvP games have problems in one way or another, often related to class balance and the swing of nerfbats to the left and right.
I like pvp mainly because i've always been arouns pvp when introduced to online gaming - It started with PvP oriented MUD's..
PvP is Thrilling - i never get a pulse from doing PvE, but i can get shaky and get a nice pulse from PvP.
So..in short, my pulse tells me PvP is quite exciting and fun.
Do MMORPG's need PvP to be fun ?

Welcome to Atys Melita!!!
PvP to me is certainly expected. Unless the game is one race/faction etc, and everyone is essentially the same, I expect conflict.
To answer the original question, no it is not NEEDED...but greatly appreciated.

Not too much offense here but people who get a thrill from pvp really do give other people online a bad name, I mean come on get a life. take up extreme group crocheting instead of ruining the mmorpg industry by making it far too pvp orientated.
I get more of a thrill from folding the towels in my bathroom, but in your defence I don't really get much of a thrill from anything but from killing other people online well it's hardly an adrenaline rush.

Hehe whats so wrong with finding it exciting to compete?johntf wrote:Not too much offense here but people who get a thrill from pvp really do give other people online a bad name, I mean come on get a life. take up extreme group crocheting instead of ruining the mmorpg industry by making it far too pvp orientated.

I do find it thrilling to play poker, when the bet is money. I find it thrilling to learn to know new people, to roleplay and to get up in the morning and see if i'll be in a bad mood.
Some might find it thrilling to Trekk naked
What i DONT like is "Some" of the people who generally flock PvP oriented games, those immature loudmouths who yell 'PWN!1' and those who bash you, dance on your corpse and blame the lag/weather/divine powers/you for cheating when they lose.
I also dont find it particulary fun to fold towels in the bathroom, or to make the dishes for that matter.
Mature PvP (if such a thing exist) i like - i like to see myself as one of those who performs mature PvP.
You lose, you bow and say 'Good fight'.
Edit: I dont know what PvP is like in this game, but killing someone who's AFK or just walking up to someone harvesting and bashing them to kingdom come is a bit of a 'No no' in my book. The keyword is competition, not griefing.
What i mean here is that the game feels kind of pointless right from the start. I'll gain 'levels' - kick some monsters in the butt and thats it.. If there's pvp present there's always something more around the corner then the endless grind most Mmorpg's come with these days.melita wrote:I generally frown upon a game that has no PvP - it's an endgame goal for me.
I guess it's a matter of preference - You like bananas and i dont. I dont have to come with a label just because i find pvp exciting.

Get him Bitsy! I agree with you totally. In addition as long as PvP is optional, and does not affect players who wish to avoid it, i don't see a problem. I do have to admit the spires have me a little concerned though....

Re: Do MMORPG's need PvP to be fun ?
You can't make people be mature, but if the game sets up PvP in a structured format, I believe it can be fun and the immaturity minimized. Outpost battles to date have been fun for me (and I'm general not pro-PvP) because they have such a specific set of competive rules.melita wrote:Mature PvP (if such a thing exist) i like - i like to see myself as one of those who performs mature PvP.

Open PvP on the other hand is something I think encourages immaturity. A mature player doesn't want to walk up and just shoot someone for no reason or gain. But, the immature do.
These threads that lump all PvP together might be better served by making the distinction between open PvP and a more structured PvP. We've heard from the anti-pvp folks that seemed to hate it all. And, we've heard from the pro-pvp that seem to love it all. How many feel like I do, I wonder? (probably no one; I'm use to it)

From my short experience so far about this community - this is where ALL the mature people ended up. I've never met such a friendly and welcoming bunch of people!oldmess wrote:...You can't make people be mature...
I also agree that open PvP tend to attract the most rotten people..

Re: Do MMORPG's need PvP to be fun ?
I wasn't going to post in this thread, but the past few posts have kind of highlighted the issues that I have with the recent implementation of PvP
My character can now walk out to the nearest temple and see a stele with a list of point scores on it that were awarded for killing other homins. Who assigned the point value to individual homins? Was it the kami? the karavan? If one (or both) of these, then how did the point scale come out identical for both sides? Did these two opposing powers get together and agree on a point scale for homin lives? Why do homins accept this without question?
With Outposts, the whole system seems to have been designed to set friends to fighting each other. Guilds naturally will want an outpost in their home territory, so the fiercest competition for a limited item will be between allies - but the only way to take an outpost is by fighting the current owner. So you either do without an outpost or fight your friends. That is fine if you think of Ryzom as an online boardgame, but it is supposed to be an RPG. How is all of this supposed to fit into the Saga of Ryzom?
I don't have a problem with PvP as such, but the implementation in an RPG has to make sense in the context of the storyline. Ryzom is high in the voting for the storyline award on MMORPG. The designers should be taking more care of such a highly rated item.
One of the biggest attractions of this game for me was that it was an ongoing story, a living world, with no 'endgame' where people have finished with the story and just amuse themselves by bashing each other.melita wrote:I generally frown upon a game that has no PvP - it's an endgame goal for me.
Unfortunately, the rules deemed necessary to structure the PvP make no sense in the context of the story.oldmess wrote:Outpost battles to date have been fun for me (and I'm general not pro-PvP) because they have such a specific set of competive rules.
