btw, the background seems to dance around in opera when doing, well, anything ^^ (dragging map, clicking on the little flags, etc.)

Yeah, Opera seems to have the most bugs with regard to layer positioning of any of the 4 I test with (Firefox, IE, Netscape, Opera). It seems that it is temporarily resizing the overall document, including all non-visible content, while you have the mouse button held down, thus causing the background of the page to shift to account for the new document size.

I made a slight adjustment to the background attachment which should eliminate the visible shift. However, it's not eliminating the crazy document resizing which causes the scroll bars to jump around.

actually, the scrollbar-thing isn't annoying at all imho ^^
