i'm currently lvl 29 and decided to go to the mainland....where i get killed by everything over there...

I think that you can still find the weakest herbivores and birds, although they may be harder to find. Ask around about where or, better yet, team with someone until you gain a few more levels.

So it's impossible to reach level 80 with only level 20 creatures and mats at your disposal.

The Islands Materials Merchants have Q50 mats for sale. Would that explain anything?

sucking/weaning will be good. As long as you hunt in the area of the city you started in you should be fine. Look at the star indicator - 1* easy 5* not so easy =)
