I suspect the hope is that it might bring in and retain some of the PvP fans.

I havent ever seen a "I'm leaving game due to PvP" thread but i have seen alot of "I'm leaving to to lack of content" ones

so i really do not think anyone will leave due to PvP.

The ongoing poll shows the vast majority of people want other "content" over PvP.
Why court the minority with the "content" they want instead of the majority?

Why not try and get all them people that left due to wanting Outposts. Let em get on with OP's and then they can move onto fluffy bunnys and never ending missions

Since they have already put so much efforts into Outposts, it would be kinda silly to not let them go all the way.
I do suspect though, that Outposts were delayed in part because there was huge re-design and re-thinking of what Outposts suppose to do for the game. I think in the beginning, they only want Outposts to be for PVP'ing purpose only, but after rethinking (or mebbe Jessica got on their case), they decided to make Outposts to do so much more than just for PVP'ing purpose.
I hope the wait is worth it.

That is actually a relatively good point, people did say they would return to check out outposts, I doubt many will, but we'll see.
Whether they stick around this time or not will depend on more than outposts.
I think R2 will be the make or break content.

I think its about the AI of the hireable NPCs and about the mysterious benefits from outposts. The buildings are there since the beginning. I guess AI and benefits take place in huge parts of the source code.
Nobody should worry. There is the promise that nobody will be forced into PvP. I belief this. Those benefits nobody tells us a word about could be a big positive surprise. Those who are concerned about ganking should try to see those people as the "mutant ganking homins".The long announced 5th race

.
It doesnt make a difference if there are stormtroopers, Kitin or PvP-player trying to kill me.

It has only started, Basic.
PvP != Content
When the outposts that we have built are mowed down by griefer guilds for no better reason than they can, then you will see the subscriptions drop.
The roots are large, and hard to patrol effectively, but even now we have problems with unprovoked attacks on harvesters that are getting supreme mats. Certainly, the attackers will say that they are preventing another guild from becoming strong, and that there is nothing wrong with PvP in the roots, and that if we want this to stop, we should go try and kill them
after all, that is the way the game was made. There is no validity to the thought that "the community is mature enough to handle it."
I once thought that SoR would be different. Until this week, I thought it would be done right or that "the community is mature enough to handle it." But, it is now apparent that neither is true. In any community; there will be those who only derive satisfaction by drawing attention to themselves through negative actions. Ours is no different. By increasing the role PvP has in SoR, we increase the opportunity for these dregs to act out in a way that can not be ignored by the rest of the community.
When we increase the exposure of the negative aspects of the game, the game becomes worse, not better.

I think that article of Jessica's makes some very valid points about PvP, and Grimjim is right, the fact that it is dated October 2001 is no big deal because the article is still very relevant.
I'm not a huge PvP player, but it doesn't bother me. I just haven't seen PvP done well at all in any fantasy based mmorpg. If any of you have ever played Darkspace which was a sci-fi space combat mmog with some rp to it if you wanted to, they did PvP pretty good, but it is a different style game all together....not to mention that combat between players and different factions were essential for the game play. If incorporated properly into the dynamics of the gaming world PvP could work in SoR, but as with previous and other current mmorpgs, that is a big "if".
I am very interested in seeing the Outposts, and I think it could work, if Nevrax does it properly. The thing is that it is so easy to screw up a PvP system and everything to go to heck in a hand basket with grievers and immature power mongers just ruining the game for all.......although I would like to think that we here at Ryzom have maybe one of the best bunch of folks in the community in a mmorpg........but that doesn't mean it can't happen. I voted for raids over PvP in the
Raids, Rites or PvP poll, but I don't want to see Outposts totally disappear especially with all the work that Nevrax has put into them. We'll all just have to wait and see how it goes.
