Right. What is a beta good for then anyway if the game still misses that much content and is that bugged?

Exactly, I tried SoR beta back in April, from there its gone all the way to September FB. The game should have been released with content in.
They should have released next month when it was ready, because if it gets bad press at all it will kill the game.

Bad press is generated by players that complain as much as you guy do in 90% of the cases. This is due to the magazin writers looking at the forums rather then testing the game for themselfes. And how could they test a game with the complexity of Ryzom to do it a just review? They maybe look at it 1-2 hours and thats it. Consider how much you can achive in 1-2 hours.
Plus you can always find reasons to push the release date further back. There is always something missing needs to be added or fixed. But eventually the investors want to see some money back so you have to release and fix/add the things as you go along. As I am sure Ryzom will.
Now 10 month after release Horizons finally is getting a good game and I would consider returning to it if i didn't like Ryzom more. But it just shows that if you are willing to stick around a while you will get a nice experience in the end. And its not as if there is not enough to do for now. There is lots of content even if its not there in form of quests yet.
I am enjoying myself very much and due to my set up can always alternate what i do when one thing gets too tediuos. The big advantage of the allrounder =) Disadvantage we will always be behind the specialists lvl wise.
All imho

I know a couple of game reviewers (game and web) and to be fair if they are reviewing a MMORPG for copy, they usually put a week or so into it Also their reviews are often state whether its first impressions or not. In a weeks play, you can get to grips with the mechanics and the look and feel of a MMORPG, even taste some different areas and different character builds/races etc. Obviously commentary on the high level play isn't going to be there, but then the decision to play a MMORPG isn't often based on what the high level play will be all about, its about the new features and new advances in the genre really, and whether there is flexibility in the game system enough to please casual and hardcore players.
Ryzom has got a few shortcomings in terms of content, but dynamic persistant worlds change all the time, the players expect that, and it fuels many a heated argument on forums such as these. At present Ryzom was probably released about right, the beta was over and the game polished enough for release. There is major competition on the horizon. Nothing in the game will truly break your experience of the world as it is. And new content promised soon will give the people who signed up on release something to look forward and work towards. The games combat/crafting/harvesting and skill structures are all in place for people to enjoy the progression and development of a character in the true roleplaying sense, and hopefully with the patches the story itself will start to tie in with the world and what is happening on it. Ryzom has enough "new features" to make it an interesting place to start establishing yourself. We are definitely past beta here. If they can achieve their content promises in the forthcoming patches, then I think the current players will be happy. I don't think Ryzom was ever pitched to take on the bigger MMORPG's, it will receive the loyal cult following it deserves. It'll work for some people and not for others. One mans meat is another mans poison. It's release date whether some think it was too early or not will have very little bearing on this. IMHO.
