First, thank you for an explanation of why this change was made. Regardless of whether everyone agrees or not, at least now we know. When it comes to changes in game mechanics, I think that's the most important issue. Story changes are different; hints are more than appropriate to avoid spoilers.
As far as increasing the inventory limits, my
suggestion would be similar to the limit on the number of map flags. Allow for an increase, but make us earn it through a ritual. I agree you can't just open up the inventory completely; we will hoard and you will have server problems. And if you have server problems, we are going to have performance problems. No thanks.
But, if it's possible to increase storage (both weight, bulk and slots), make us earn it. It doesn't have to be a huge thing, but why should it be free? Just because we want it? Just because we pay our subscription on time? No. Make it part of the story/encyclopedia. i.e. someone teaches us a skill that allows us to personally carry more stuff.
Later, if storage becomes less of an issue due to reduced hardware costs, you could increase it again with yet another ritual. Each of the two hypothetical rituals would give +X storage so that doing the 2nd one before the 1st would be OK.
