This is also something most people aren't considering when they're 'damning' the Ryzom timeout function - if a server doesn't respond for 1 second, is it really down? Have you really been disconnected? Or do you wait for 3 seconds? Or maybe 10? Disconnecting a client after a couple of seconds of inactivity leads to more annoyance than having to wait 30 seconds in my experience. I've received the 'Server down or you have been disconnected' message inside 30 secs before, that's for sure.
EDIT: The network status should always be available by pressing N. If it doesn't appear, either you're focused on a chat window still (111111111addsnooo) or your client has has crashed - in which case, it would exit back to windows at that point on it's own.
