Thanks again, katriell and maryen. You might have said that "make" would take a couple of hours to run through, hehe ;) . I added x permission to the python script (rally.py), aye, and it's now downloading ryzom installer for the second time - failed checksum the first time through. I hope that's the only file which needs to be modified. The script asks for a folder to download to, but seems unable to create the directory if it doesn't already exist, so I ended up hitting enter and downloading to the default directory.

Failed again :( . "Installer is invalid ...". So I made a copy of it anyway, to my home directory, then answered "y" to "do you want to delete it and try redownloading it?":
Removing client installer ...
Client installer removed!

/home/moi/setup_files/Rally v1.2

OSError: [Errno 2] No such file or directory: Ryzom Installer'
Starting the download again with rally.py

Two successive download failures is suspicious - I have never experienced this before, under Windows, rarely had a failed checksum to be honest, unless the original was corrupt (as I found with Ubuntu 6.10 installer ISO image, early on this year).

I just tried to get the MD5 checksum from ryzom.com, and got a 404 :p . Does someone have a copy, please, so I can run my own checks? Now looking for a linux checksum program for this purpose.

Edit: Discovered that there is already an embedded command, md5sum, hehe :D .
My copied download yields 8ee082599f933d75cc3afbc360006d1.
Which I now see matches exactly the value in rally.py !

Edit again: typed a D in the end of the checksum, instead of d - corrected

Okay, so no surprise that my third download of the Ryzom installer failed verification again. So I entered "n" at the prompt and received exactly the same prompt again:
Installer is invalid, do you want to delete it and try redownloading it (answering no will result in this script closing)?
Input (y|n):
I typed "n" again and then got:
Closing installer then, goodbye ...
Back to command line :) .

So I opened rally.py and saved as "original rally.py", then deleted everything from "def yesno..." to "def install_ryzom..." and saved that. Then ran rally.py again, duh :p (spot another stupid mistake, hehe).

...
...
Installer detected, continuing ...
Looking good now :) .

What the hell. Tried double-clicking the nice Ryzom icon on my desktop, and the game seems to launch. Just as last week, the text is all illegible ... but after login it's clear from experience that there are checks and patches being applied.

Eventually, I see a screen which I presume is asking me to relaunch. So I restart my system and launch Ryzom again, login without being able to read any text, and see the character login screen, with Jam in disco outfit :) - I could live with that very happily :) . Sound system is spitting at me and playing some semblance of music (I understand that sound is essentially unsupported in linux anyway, right?)

After clicking "Play"?, the game loads up, then for a brief couple of seconds, I see Jam in Yrkanis, lots of textures missing, and then the game crashes.

Sound is finicky. There's been some discussion about it, but nothing really step-by-step or conclusive. Two points I recall:
  • You need a 2.6.17 kernel or higher.
  • You need a soundcard that has "hardware mixing" (if I remember correctly), such as a Creative SoundBlaster.
I haven't bothered with it much, myself. Eventually I ended up roleplaying my main character as deaf. :p Mute it and disable sound in winecfg until you get the more pressing issues worked out. As for those, *hugs* sorry you're having so many problems but I don't personally have any ideas on how they might be solved.

Currently booting on a kernel which claims to be 2.6.17-11-386 - that came with the "restricted" fglrx graphics card driver. But as you may imagine, I'd just like to get the game running visually, in the first instance.

jamela wrote:What the hell.

After clicking "Play"?, the game loads up, then for a brief couple of seconds, I see Jam in Yrkanis, lots of textures missing, and then the game crashes.

jamela, i'm fixing the bugs that were in the program (sorry i missed those). as for the failure, ryzom is very finnicky when installing and sometimes the installer will crash at the very end. However, as long as your install reached 100% then it installed in linux and will work.

as for the bad graphics, due to bad input, the game was unable to copy the files you need into your ryzom folder. You can get them from inside the installer's folder. The files you need to copy most is the config file and the patch.pl file. Also, how did you get this?
OSError: [Errno 2] No such file or directory: '/home/jamie: P/Desktop/Ryzom'
what did you enter as your home directory?
*edit*
Jamela, when you did this:
So I opened rally.py and saved as "original rally.py", then deleted everything from "def yesno..." to "def install_ryzom..." and saved that. Then ran rally.py again, duh (spot another stupid mistake, hehe).

Installer detected, continuing ...
Looking good now [\quote]

what did you change?

*edit 2*

I made a change where the installer will detect if you already have the game installed and just patch it to run with wine. Also fixed a bunch of bugs, including the one that stopped you from downloading the game :/.

you missing text/textures because you running in direct3d mode.

try this: ryzom_linux_installer_070304.run (it's big ~700KiB because it has msvcrt.dll and mfc42.dll included.. shoot me if it's licence violation ;-)
you dont need to do full install, just pick "Ryzom scripts" (overwrites client.cfg, creates ryzom_linux.sh and patch.pl to ryzom folder, copies msvcrt.dll and mfc42.dll to ryzom folder, adds ryzom specific registry entries, creates 2 desktop icons to HOME/Desktop and removes 2 icons Ryzom install puts to Desktop)

you can point where to install ryzom scripts and in what directory ryzom is installed if it's not found in "program files/ryzom".

--
if anyone wants to unpack it, then on command line
sh ryzom_linux_installer_070304.run --noexec --target dest
unpacks it to directory "dest". it creates it if needed.

i hope i got rid of all the bugs (that person should be shot who invented space in directory/file name).
