Read other topics, if you think offensive mage is too difficult when soloing, you must be doing something wrong, and I mean very wrong.aneuvotf wrote:Range? You sure? a mob can get within attack range on me quite easily, i cast root and within 12s their out of it and at my feat...
I just want a little more defence for a mage... i mean come on... Mages are meant to be intelligent... and whats so intelligent about going into a fight without defence?

Your not understanding me correctly, i love the mage character, its great... its just the lack of defensive spells is somewhat annoying.vaynen wrote:Read other topics, if you think offensive mage is too difficult when soloing, you must be doing something wrong, and I mean very wrong.
The Invulnerabilty spell i have yet to try... but a single spell for defence for a mage... i mean... instant death if anything gets within range of you (and im not on about a merciless little yobo)
With the inability to out run-things then mages will need another way to escape from foes that would cause major problems to us... and indeed, i find it easy to solo with my mage, but only mobs that are quite easy...

You're doing some blunders if a mob gets to you and melees you down... or you're really unlucky with resists
Re: Player V Player...
I understand what you mean, but the difficulty in what you ask, is that the mage class shouldn't be stronger than other classes. There are many games in which the mage class is so much stronger, that other classes become less appealing and everyone goes magi. There needs to be balance, it is just a matter of how it is done, and I agree that in some cases it can be at the wrong costs, but those points of view are arbitrary and differ per player. So in this matter I think it could be an endless discussion, right now the mage isn't strong enough to go solo against every possible mob, which is good. This game isn't all about solo playing, there other people, for a good reason tooaneuvotf wrote:Your not understanding me correctly, i love the mage character, its great... its just the lack of defensive spells is somewhat annoying.

Eh... there's the offensive and defensive branches, if you focused exclusively on the offensive part, you should be in a group and not solo.
The Invulnerabilty spell i have yet to try...
Is that a spell or an action? Seems to me fighters get it as well

There are means to keep the mob away other than root. Tried fear? understand how linked spells work?

How is the situation different for melee fighters? They can't teleport either and they can't outrun the mobs... they can beat them down to death? Well, if they can beat one mob down to death, sometimes the adds get them in a lot of problems, which is the same situation for mages... if you mispull a single mob and can't handle it; well a tank doing the same mistake would have the same options as you... they'd only take a bit longer to die.
Solo the mage can take out mobs much higher level than meleers could... and survive, and kill it faster than melees would.
Re: Player V Player...
Im getting gangbanged!!!
Hehehe, This thread was about PVP but i guess its turned into Mage wars... hm... lol
Anyway, i hope a defensive spell is introduced pretty soon, it would help the mages in the game who like to get in close and personal.
Additionaly... last night the problem wasnt that i couldnt handle myself, it was that i was getting ganked by 3 or more of a single mob.
Then id run and end up running to the edge of the land lol.... which was fun i must admit, then id die... lol...
Now i know im pretty low level, and i will advance to be able to handle such situations, but to handle situations where there are alot tougher mobs i think mages will require a shield spell... all im saying.

P.S Lets get back on the PVP topic.

My points were about PvP as well, mages have enough defenses already. If you take a mage 60 and a fighter 60... if the fight starts at a range, there's a good probability that the mage will win.
Anyway, i hope a defensive spell is introduced pretty soon, it would help the mages in the game who like to get in close and personal.
You mean in addition to root, fear, stun, sleep, etc? Or do you insist on having an EQ wizard with shadowstep/nuke / EQ necro with darkness/dot/lifetap; or even more annoying an EQ enchanter with mezz/manatap stun-nukes? That's basically how PvP went on EQ, mages were overpowered at first; so they made a 66% cap on their damage, it wasnt enough so tons of resist gear was necessary to bring any kind of balance, until all balance was destroyed for the casters. Similar things happened in DAOC to casters...
Casters are always overpowered in PvP when used correctly, and somehow caster players always feel like their fragility should be an excuse to make them invulnerable by adding things like teleports / permanent roots etc?
Additionaly... last night the problem wasnt that i couldnt handle myself, it was that i was getting ganked by 3 or more of a single mob.
Wrong pull, or wrong fight location. If a tank pulls 3 more mobs than his target, he's going to die too. No difference there. In any case it's not the sort of situation where any category of character can survive easily.
Then id run and end up running to the edge of the land lol.... which was fun i must admit, then id die... lol...
What do you think a fighter would have done? Killed all 3 adds? Even small goaris can still be a threat to someone who's fighting a bigger one, they hit hard from time to time... others like baying gingos seem to have waaaaay more hitpoints than baying ragus...
If you want to survive you'll need to learn aggro ranges, survey the patterns in mob behaviour, know your spells, and chose your fight location correctly. It applies to fighters as well...
Now i know im pretty low level, and i will advance to be able to handle such situations, but to handle situations where there are alot tougher mobs i think mages will require a shield spell... all im saying.
Err... how low? Because you seem to have quite a few misconceptions
