I'm still waiting to see what PCGamer comes up with in the next issue...they claim they are putting a good, healthy review in next month...*crosses fingers*

So is Gamespy. They said in their "out of the box" preview that they would be back in a few weeks with a much more indepth review of the game, including raid system etc. That would be due any day now.

It'll be interesting to see how that pans out, considering IGN is the same company.

Computer Gaming world had a good preview of the game, I wonder if they will do a good review of it. Btw, there was a manual that came with the game? I never looked.

I think the IGN review was very fair. Just because he didn't mention all the good things doesn't mean that it was a bad review. After all a game should 'suck you in' from the start. So what's the point of playing past 350 hp when you see a bunch of broken quests, lag and rubber banding (I still get this with speedrun) and an overall lack of content including sound?

The manual IS terrible, and several in game functions were in french last I checked.
I haven't read the in game functions since beta though I heard the other day someone said a skill description was still in another language. Besides, in game data is so shallow you can go through it in 15 minutes and not ever have to go back.

Remember, this is the guy's job. He only has limited time before he needs to test something else so he can get his check from IGN and move on to the next game. He didn't say the game was terrible and you shouldn't buy it. He just said what we all say as well. 'They need to fix a lot of things but it's really cool.'. The difference between him and us, is that people will actually listen to him and base whether or not they buy the game on that article. Because of that you seem to just be using him as a scapegoat to vent your fustrations.

As for pc gamer, I just hope they got to play on the advanced test server with patch 01 already out :) maybe that'll help.

Factually inaccurate reviews are bad...mkay. This guy didn't make it off newb island and he obviously only played a Tryker.

I have no problem with negative points in a review.

I do however have a problem with a review where the reviewer obviously didn't do enough research on his subject to make it thorough and accurate. He made a few comments in there that were plain wrong. Compared to most other reviews I've read on IGN, which are usually much more detailed and better informed, the Ryzom review was sub-standard. It has nothing to do with me being a "fanboi" (give me a break already) or because he dared to say something negative about it. I am well prepared to accept someone's negative views as well as their positive ones - so long as they're informed and based on *accurate* information.

As for the game being tricky to learn and what-not, sure. Of course it is. I've yet to play any MMORPG that I understood 100% within the first few days or whatever. There are aspects of Anarchy Online that *still* mystified me after months of playing. As for the manual.. well, I guess that's subjective.. I've only breezed through the manual and only occasionally refer to it for a quick-key or something. Most of the game I've learned by playing, so I can't relate to the poor documentation comments..

And heck, it's not even like he gave it a *bad* review... 7-point-something or whatever he gave is still above average. I just think that someone reading that review would not be getting an accurate or thorough enough description of the game to make an informed decision on whether to try it. Thus, my remarks.

Tricky to learn? I first played in one of those beta open weekends for 2 days without a manual and within that time I learned the game enough to understand almost everything. Most of the veteran players were really helpful in explaining things I didn't understand. This guy not only did not get his facts straight, it sounds like he played alone on newbie island. He never mentions anything about teams or grouping. I got pretty far in the game from just a few hours of playing, and from his review, it sounds like he didn't even get that far.

I agree with this actually. They didn't say the game was horrible. In fact they gave it s 7.9. They mentioned just like most new MMO's it has issues. But they also said that they feel those will be addressed rather quickly as patches are done frequently. To be very honest the people who are going to be interesting in playing a MMO are going to look at a site like http://www.mmorpg.com more than IGN.

And yes the game is not easy to learn. Earth and Beyond was easy to learn. City of Heroes was easy to learn. Saga of Ryzom is not.

Sorry, but IGN has given some horrible reviews. They have given games that deserved lower ratings almost great ratings because of certain companies. They have also given games that deserve much higher ratings low ratings because it didn't live up to "their" expectations. All reviews are opinionated and biased in one way or another. Gamespot is another that I swear has been bought out by EA.

The only way I'll understand a review of an MMO is after a few months and a few patches, they come back to give it another review otherwise it is never a fair review.
