"Magnetic" obviously doesn't mean the same thing on Atys as it does to us. The Zoraï use "magnetism" to make things float, not just metal, all sorts of things. And apparently amber has strong "magnetic" properties.

Well, that or it does mean the same thing, but the sap that flows through everything has magnetic properties without being a metal, somehow.

It would make some kind of sense, I suppose. In our world magnetism is a force caused by flowing electrons, so on Atys it can be caused by flowing sap? Maybe sap is actually full of free electrons.

Mmmm, tasty discussion. :D

The Zoraï seek out "places of high magnetism". That must be what Magnetic Cartography is about.
Now that I look for where I read that, I can't find it, but I did find these:
