Nope, I never made a habit of putting on music while playing either. Though last year I did listen to the podcasts while digging a few times.

I always listened to music while playing Ryzom, but on rather low volume so I could still hear the atmosphere and sound effects. Usually no matter the occation I listened (and still do) to chill electronic music. Among my huge collection just some of my favourites include:
Air, Boards of Canada, Bonobo, dZihan & Kamien, Fila Brazilia, Kruder & Dorfmesiter, Lemongrass, LTJ Bukem, London Elektricity, Röyksopp, Telefon Tel Aviv, Tosca, Thievery Corporation, William Orbit, Zero 7. And some more well-known bands like Radiohead, Modest Mouse etc.

You are not alone
I never listen music in game and even i always lower (not 0 but in a way it doesn't not waste the environment) the music volume and cap the ambient volume.
The only problem in Ryzom were the kipee voices... but I really hated GF for the crap decision to lower everything instead of just fine tuning the kipee.... all the world appeared to me less living.

i dont listen to music playing ryzom. i used to listen while playing Half-life.. and playing Battlefield2 was on teamspeak too much to listen to music...
as for music taste in general.. . .
drum n bass, indie, folk, acoustic, electro, house, breaks, 2step, speed garage, hardcore, hardkore(gabber), metal, etc.. haha happy hardcore.. i was thinking the other day, the amount of people that listen to happy hardcore has to be an elite few. i think 1 in 100 like it. i am proudly one of those few (even though maybe squires was joking and making fun of happy hardcore
... cant say i know him well enough to know when sarcasm is present).. how can you not like 160 - 185 BPM!!!!
my list goes..
pendulum (dnb), high contrast (dnb), page france(indie-ish), the new amsterdams(indie-ish), The Promise Ring(emo), M83 (faux-80s), Atreyu(Screamy-Metal), Sander Kleinenberg(Electro-House), Kaskade(House), LCD-Soundsystem(Electro), The National(indie-ish)... anyways those have the highest playcounts.
i listen to everything though pretty much.. different mood = different music.

Nope, but I think we are in the minority! :S
That said, I occaisionally have my playlists on, contains all sorts: Neubauten, Muse, Elbow, Stereolab, Auf der Maur, Nitzer Ebb, Radiohead, Parliament, PIL, Swn, Sneaker Pimps, FLA, Funkadelic, Hawkwind, SOAD, Deftones, Snow Patrol, Mew, Arcade Fire, PWEI, Pixies, Janes Addiction ... blah, blah blah you wanna list of "what I like"? well there it is ... thats just the stuff I can remember that's on them. Basically, if I wanna listen to music while I'm playing (rarely), it has only to be music I like to be OK, since the only thing I reckon actually FITS playing Ryzom, is Ryzom music.
However, the tune I reckon most fitting for Atys (especially PR digging, which is where I spend half my time there):
