Re: I hope this is just a coincidence...
Really? When I started playing I was using a machine that was in various parts anything from three to twelve years old - it wasn't nearly as enrapturingly gorgeous as a GeForce 8800 makes it; and playing Ryzom did basically blow multitasking out the window... but it *ran* fine. :/

Re: I hope this is just a coincidence...
was usually some dodgy stuff after patches but 99% of the time it ran fine
Re: I hope this is just a coincidence...
I'm talking about GeForce 2 machines that were still being used, or the machines with only 256MB ram etc. I don't think many people would enjoy buying a game that they have to run in stickfigure mode to get a decent framerate. =)whiterider wrote:Really?

*performs necromantic chants* Gah, I never resurrected a thread before, hope I don't botch it...
For anyone who might be interested to hear and hasn't heard yet, CoH's version of the Ring is now live. It seems to be doing much better there than it did in Ryzom too.
And ofcourse it's still being heralded as 'the first MMO to offer User Created Content'.
*mutter*
I guess this means even less hope for those of us who were still hoping the new devs would get the Ring fixed, now that it doesn't even have the "unique selling point" going for it anymore.

Re: I hope this is just a coincidence...
Well, easy enough.
They´ve had enough time and a big, active team to develop this.
Appart from "copying" the idea, which is completely normal in almost every industry in the world, they simply were lucky that Nevrax did go down and so coudn´t take the claim anymore.
But yes, it´s a sad thing to see others take credit for this idea.
And don´t think those that built the RING in the first place will take it lightly.
*sigh*
And mind you, I´m sure this System´s got its fair share of bugs too, only their´re keeping quite to the press about it.
And well, it seems that COH/V Players are a bit more willing to built their own content.
Which, apart from those bugs that are there, was and still is a major hindrance to the RING.
Given enough time and players that use it (and report bugs) it may still be useful some day.
I at least hope so!
Edit: *giggle*
I just logged into CoV to take a look at the system and read the following message on screen:
"Emergency Server Maintenance..... regarding issues with Architect Entertainment Studios." So, not such a smooth start after all.
Edit II:
After having it desribed to me by an NPC (Good Idea, should be taken up by our guys )
I tried to make up a so called Story on the fly.
You may add up to 5 "Missions" to a Story (i.e. a Questline)
You can choose from set NPCs already used in the Game, or can create new ones as Contacts to start the mission.
You can choose settings, like cave, flat, tech complex, etc as places to set your story in.
You can choose whether the system shall generate a random "map" (i. e. a labyrinth) out of your chosen setting, or you can place fixed tiles on a dark map to create your own maze to wander through.
You can choose from already existing "villainous", or "hero" NPC groups to place them as enemies in your setting, either at random or self placed. By placing dots on the map.
You can create a "souvenir", which is in fact nothing but a note in the mission locks of participants, to remember your Story by.
You may choose who may enter the Story and whether its "neutral", "hero", or "Villans" based themed.
And all this is done via a text interface, with drop down menus and "write your text here" interfaces. The NPCs may speak your own texts of course.
It´s pretty easy, but extremely limited in choices and still of the same mold of "Missions" you´ll do in active gameplay.
Which I personally find extremely boring. And I truly hope that some creative soul may find a way to have his "story" not as stupendous as those InGame.
Thats about it.
(The created Stories, will be saved to a special Story Server, where your NPC-Contacts are placed in the existing landscape, or your missions replace those of existing NPCs , you enter it through a special portal.
Nice Idea too.)
My first impression: It´s nothing like the freedom the RING has to offer. Get rid of the Bugs in it and it will stomp COV/Hs system into the mud!

Re: I hope this is just a coincidence...
I've only taken a quick look at some of the release information, but this addition seems pretty dumbed down as compared to what can be done in R2.. In R2 you can create an environment; somewhat limited, yes, but you can make it have a certain ambiance with the options available. It looks like cox is just a 'create some npcs to fight and interact with' and maybe make it appear to be a mission. I've never played the game, so I dunno how it would play out.
If some of the issues surrounding it can be ironed out and some incentive to use it can be had, I believe R2 will still be in a league of its own.
Peace,
- Sui
Edit: Dern, I was interrupted mid post (for about an hour) and missed Acridiel's update to his post. At least I know my impression wasn't too far off now. No need to try that other game out .

Re: I hope this is just a coincidence...
Ah yes, thank you Acri. I've not actually had the time to check it out myself yet (*shakes fist at essays*) but as you can see by my post from last year at the bottom of page 1 of this thread, that's about what I expected.acridiel wrote:My first impression: It´s nothing like the freedom the RING has to offer. I agree the Ring has a lot more potential still, but fact remains that this means it's lost some of it's uniqueness. And with CoH having far more players using it and much more marketing for their 'Ring', it overshadows ours and probably draws away players who'd be interested in an MMO with user-generated content. It'll be harder to use our Ring as a selling point again if they ever do get it fixed and start advertising.
Re: I hope this is just a coincidence...
Mission Architect has Ring beat in rewards-
It offers full XP, PLUS special "tickets" that can be used towards basically any other rewards (ie drops) that are in the game.
(tickets are earned by both creators and participants)
That alone will ensure its always more popular than Ring among any average group of gamers

It also allows you to host your scenarios without having to babysit them, doesn't it? And has a ranking system for scenarios with the best ones being perma-hosted. All the things we were supposed to get but never got...
But that's exactly the things I'm referring to when I speak about getting the Ring "fixed".
