Well anyone who would suddenly stop being your friend for the side you pick in a fictional conflict wasn't really much of a friend to start with.... that's going a bit of track though as I don't really disagree with the idea behind your advice

The right way to look at it

There is nothing bad in pick a faction, or in stay neutral; If I were you, I probably try to stay neutral for a time (i didn't factioned almost lvl100 or so). I recommend you to see how the guilds behave, and chose that who fits more your likes.
You can see all aspects of game (from OP battles to hunting zones) and then choose. While, IMHO, all the factions have very nice people in (And very bad people either), there are better guilds and worse guilds, so you can take your time to see the most fitting to you.
Remember that most guild want to recruit good people, so don't feel pressure in that side; when you decide to choose a guild, that guild will be, surely, happy to invite you.

You will go a long way with that attitude.
Speaking as someone who chose Kami based on the lore and not for any other reason (i.e. I don't do PvP), I would say don't choose a side because of numbers. Particularly numbers based partly on propoganda. In fact don't base your choice on propoganda at all. Base it on your experience of other players within the factions. If you truly want an informed choice, take your time to get to know a good number of homins from both sides. Then choose the ones that feel right to you.
I made my choice long before there was PvP in the game so it wasn't based on the people in the factions, purely on the lore. I chose the Kami because I trusted their "save the planet" philosophy over the karavan's strip mining approach. I honestly think that if I was making my choice now, knowing what I know and have experienced, I'd stay neutral; I wouldn't choose Karavan because I don't like what they stand for in the lore.

The Karavan lore is filled with lies, the Kami lore is filled with mysteries. The Karavan (faction, not the players) know more than the Kami, but the Karavan won't ever tell you the truth. There are things that neither faction knows the truth about (like the 'rainbows', tryton, etc). The Karavan gave us some hints on making Range weapons, the Kami learned us how to use Magic. Something like that, your choice.

boils down to whether you prefer magic vs. technology as far as lore goes, but has no effect on skills or character development (tps dont have that much effect...)

Lets face it, regardless of race, we are nothing but a bunch of stone age monkeys beeing spoon fed religious lies by two more advanced groups.
The Karavan Dont seem more evolved as a species just far more technologicaly advanced.
The Kami are far more evolved as a species thus dont really need technology to be uber pwn gankers.
Being God or its messanger allows these two groups to control the Homins of Atys like cattle. (supa powas and kick arse weapons included)
I dont like nor trust either side. I think I will join Karavan because Jena is so hawt. But I dont buy for an instant that she is a God. Why not neutral you say? Standing on the sidelines is not my thing. Fighting is fun and I want to experience all forms of Ryzom PvP.

Ooh, abolish that misconception from your mind right now.
Neutral does
not mean standing on the sidelines or abstaining from PvP and politics.
