Just one little thing though.
You claimed that 11 Mobs attacked you at once. Sorry, but thats impossible because there´s a limit of 6 Mobs per Player, so to say.
Only 6 Mobs may and can attack you at once.
Granted if you kill one, another will take it´s place if you´re standing right in the middle of a herd. But if you know those beasts are social and see the huge amount of them, why then attack at all? 0o
In RL you woudn´t attack a whole herd of buffalos alone, wouldn´t you?
But it´s okay, I degress. It´s nice to see that you back for good.
Enjoy Atys and it´s dynamic life

Just for my own FYI, is there a way to tell which mobs are social, or is this just something you pick up with experience?

Just experience; nothing ingame flags that for you. But it is by mob type, so if a given type acts social once (i.e. bodocs), it will regardless of level of bodoc or where you encountered them.

not totally true
my suspicion is that social mobs have a vision range, within which, if they see a friend being attacked, they will come to its aid.
now where this becomes relevant, is that large mobs, eg 4* or 5* kipees, physically take up more space than this 'social zone' and therefore cannot see their buddies getting molested, while smaller examples of the same species, can and will go social on you.
(its the little ones that are the troublemakers .. * points at Trykers )
The ones I really hate, though, are the interspecies socials.. Gubanis, Aranas, mektoubs... If they see you in a fight with some totally different herbivore, they may still come in and add on you.

1 last note as I prepare to leave
... That doesn't count for the starter island... Mobs don't 'add' on RoS,Some Aggro... But say Bodocs - Add on mainland, but not on RoS...

You can only have 6 things attacking you in melee at once. Now if you annoyed some magic users or ranged users it can be more. (Think Aen camp)
You CAN hit 7 with circular attack, but only if you have 6 things meleeing you and you target a 7th different mob to swing at
