Well, could this all have something to do with Ryzoms totally crappy memory-management?
I always have to restart every 2 to 4 hours, because Ryzom totally eats up all my swap. I notice when it gets time to relaunch, wenn everything gets VERY choppy. If I move in such a situation, without letting the HD transfer all the data, the game crashes - if I just wait, till the screen stops freezing, it's ok (for the next 30 seconds or so).

Memory: 46mb/1022mb
Process Virtual Memory: 853mb
Memory: 25mb/511mb
Process Virtual Memory: 905mb
Memory: 13mb/1023mb
Process Virtual Memory: 1194mb
Memory: 79mb/1023mb
Process Virtual Memory: 1155mb
Memory: 60mb/511mb
Process Virtual Memory: 901mb
Memory: 15mb/511mb
Process Virtual Memory: 909mb
Seems like Ryzom just hates physical RAM and loves swapspace.
