Universe chat is simply the wrong place for RPing.
It interferes with the stated purpose if the channel - providing help, and is counter-immersive (if such a phrase exists
) in that it makes it harder to "get into" the Atys world when you have people from all the regions talking freely and often on different subjects at the same time.
I dont beleive a little bit of politics is harmful there, but ONLY a little bit.. which means the fanatics just have to pull their heads in and behave !
There are no absolutes, every situation is dependent upon its context, but RP is better 'face to face' and doesnt need a single channel which covers all the lands of Atys .. think about it.. what happens when 2 or more different groups are trying to do simultaneous RP ?

Good phrase. Can I have a copy?
As for RP in Universe, or a universal channel, I think it would logically take a tremendous amount of effort for a homin to project communication through their nanoseed to every other conscious homin on Atys. Too much to be used for frivolous, continuous conversation and such. So generally I don't, and wouldn't, consider a universal channel IC. Guild, team, and region are understandable I believe because they're much smaller scale.

I too have seen questions regarding the factions asked and answered in Universe without problems. I have also seen them asked, and some twit who wanted to prove he/she was worthy of a 'twit of the month' prize decided it was a great time to "RP" (if you can call using RP as an excuse to be a twit valid) his/her faction. So rather than discussing the factions per lore, it became a flame match, which was finally thankfully ended by Zerlin putting people in the penalty box.
Frankly, I really think the best way for people to learn about the lore of the Kami and Kara is to hit the web site and read a little. Any RPer worth his or her salt will be willing and thankful for the opportunity to read the provided lore about the races, factions, etc.. in order to develop their character, IMHO.

Why is that unacceptable? Did you see a GM come down on someone for asking about that? I have never seen anyone yelled at for asking lore questions in Universe. Hell, I've asked them myself.
MMO's need to create a balance of what is beleivable and what is needed for fun.
I agree.
I simply do not agree that a universe-wide RP channel is necessary to have fun. I've never needed one. You are welcome to disagree with that, but that is my opinion.
Argue all you want, but the fact is that one trial subscriber last night wasn't getting the answers they wanted.
I have never argued that trial players should not get answers. I do not find asking about Kami/Karavan to be unacceptable use of Universe and I have never seen a GM that found it so. If they did you might want to file a CS ticket asking for clarification. Players most definitely should get help on whatever they need help with on the Universe channel.
I'm only saying you shouldn't engage in in-character
roleplay on the channel. Asking about anything game related is fair game and should be welcomed and I always have.

If you or anyone has been turned away from getting help on Universe then that's unfortunate, and I would suggest contacting the CSRs immediately the next time this happens. Do it right away, so they can review the chat logs. If it is a GM who is telling people to shut up for asking questions, then file a CS ticket and see if you can get in touch with a supervisor (never tried it so I have no idea how to do it, but it must be possible). If there is dialog on your screen that will prove your case I would recommend getting a screenshot so you have evidence (not that I don't believe you but it'd strengthen your argument).
I think the OP worded his comments badly... It really seems he meant that "Lore questions" or questions of an RP nature asking about the RP side of Atys are being blunted, and that should NOT be happening. But as he worded it, it sounded like he was asking to open up Universe to in-character RP, which would not be useful, because we'd lose in the RP spam the valid help questions and not be able to answer them.
Again, I and most others hold here that just about ANY reasonable question about Ryzom is valid for the Universe channel -- Gameplay, Lore, questions about how to find a good giuld, UI questions, whatever. What's not valid is engaging in non-Q&A RP and spamming the channel with stuff that will clutter it up and make helping players impossible.
Remember the goal of keeping the channel clear of non-help spam is not to give people a hard time or enforce police-state rigidity, but rather, to make it possible to see both questions and answers and thus, make it possible for players who need help, in whatever area, to get it.

Bump to everything Sandaara said, genuine question Ryzom related shouldnt be blocked but with Lore we gotta be a little carefull because different people interpret it in different ways and could easily develop to debate which can also lead to........we all know where.

Well it is also true that if they want a thorough and in-depth look at lore, they really do need to read the website. It is not practical to type longhand all the lore details into the chat window.
Simple questions that require brief answers are fine. But if they want the equivalent of several pages of text, that is what the website is for.

I believe Universe is and should be reserved for game mechanic questions. A question regarding the difference in mechanics between choosing Kami/Kara/neutral can be reasonably answered.
"What is the lore difference between Kami and Kara?" is a can of worms. I see far far too many RP-turn-propaganda answers in universe chat already, even when the questions is completely unrelated. ("I'm a Tryker, how do I get to Matis lands?" - answered with "Don't do that, they're your enemy. You should travel to the jungle to be closer to the Kami")
As a channel clearly stated to be game mechanic help, it will be far too easy for new players to accept those types of responses as facts. Other players trying to correct such statements too easily turns into IC arguments, which do not belong on the channel at all. I believe such statements should be actively limited by GMs. If you want to spew propaganda, take it to a tell. (And it would still be honorable to be upfront about your point of view on the matter there)
Do NOT believe you're capable of giving an unbiased answer. You're not. I don't care who you are.
The lore information on the website is a valuable un-biased viewpoint (or at least balanced with opposing viewpoints). Even better, in my opinion, are the Kami Sanctuaries and Karavan Temples. I realize they are only available to mainlanders, and in particular those who have trekked to an opposing land to get both viewpoints. But that seems like a good goal to me. If You want IC answers, you have to undergo and IC quest to find them.
If your fame is bad you can't approach an opposing temple, but you can click the boards from a distance to read them. That is the type of information that should be in Universe responses.

Do you honestly think a new players is going to bother contacting a CSR? No, they will just say the hell with it and move to another game.
Why do we even have a help channel at all? If people with lore questions get told to go read the website, then why shouldn't people with game mechanic questions get told to read the manual?
The more I play this game again, the more I realize why I left before.
