Well I can't find the old events listing that got so handily removed in one of the website changearounds, but while I agree that it was us who killed the kitin, it was the Kami and Karavan working together using an artifact recovered from a previous PvP event in Nexus (or something... some artifact anyways) which opened the portal for us.
Check
here for the Aris Nexus event post (a little way down is a copy/paste from the Windermeer boards with the details of the artifact),
here for the Aris portal event, and
here for Takashi's (Windermeer) post-event post telling us the K/K made the portal.

Wow... thats a great and sad memory for me... one of the last epic homin events on Windemeer and maybe the last big RP event afterwards IIRC...
The battle of course was only part of the RP between the leaders of the opposing faction aligned guilds, but this ability to stay IC immediately after fighting side by side for a common goal was great. That type of RP didn't translate as well after the merge, though we tried it with the marauder invasion... We never could make our enemies anything other than enemies here and staying IC seemed to become flamewars.
I miss the early RP days greatly...

If some of these can be claimed before the factions or the current civilisations do then perhaps a new nation can be built free of the mistakes of the past and the tension of the present.
We've already made a start.
And make mistakes of your own. You cannot flee from the world or its problems, as by your very existence you are responsible as well - either because you contribute directly, or because you do nothing. Retreating will not aid you - the world is not so large that one can manage to stop being a part of it, and its concerns. You will make your own mistakes, become your own faction and war with all sides as a result of it, perpetuating the same history which has repeated, time and time again, from the sprouting of the first seed.
But these things must be learned...I bid you peace upon your journey of lessons.

The world is a bigger place than the new lands, or the Kami and Karavan.
