In Ryzom it doesn't make sense for a Tryker to start in Zorai. And it doesn't make any sense for a newbie to get something for free. Part of this game is the world, treks are part of the game. You get the new area to play together to get used to the game, anything else you have to work for and to me that's a good thing. No silver platters here.
Also to play with each other doesn't mean you have to all be in the same location. Get all in the same guild. Create your own guild. Try to make the trip yourselves. Find someone to make the trip with you.
You know, this is a game, not an endurance test. It should be fun. Playing with your friends is fun. Why shouldn't it be encouraged?
Sure it would be weird to have more race mixing early in the game, but we are refugees, it's not completely weird that some scattering might occur.
My solution would be to allow players to choose a starting land when they leave the newbie island. They should get a warning at the selection screen letting them know that if they choose a land different from their friends it will be very difficult to trek to them. They should also get a pop-up if they choose a homeland belonging to a different race warning them about potential faction issues.

My "solution" would be to not change the game at all, but rather put up explanatory text at the character creation screen that tells a new player that you will start in a mixed-race training island but once you graduate you will start in the land of your ancestors. Include text explaining the nature of travel between the lands (i.e. the need for a trek event).

i'm sorry if its negative but Ryzom is, if not hard then at least unforgiving, and thats what makes it so good. You have to make an effort with all aspects of the game.
on a regular basis people start playing and make posts demanding the game is changed beacause they dont enjoy some aspect of it. This is a mild case of that, and it's good to discuss such things on a forum but really homins starting in their own lands makes perfect sense and there is no reason to change it.
If you have made friends on the island and dont want to befriend anyone else then find a trek, its not hard.. i almost always drop what i am doing if i hear ppl asking and help out so do many others.
You need to remember this is an RPG, there is cohesion in the lore and the live shards for a reason. if you really wanted to play together from the beginning you should have picked the same race, this is not a unique situation in Ryzom, players from different races/factions start in differernt places in almost all MMORPG's..

Good Idea
But I don´t think many will read this
And well... If your heart lies so much with your freinds, then take up the journey to meet them!! Rise to the challange!!
Just yesterday I´ve seen "The four feathers". Great movie.
A Guy all alone, travelling through wartorn lands, just to proove to his friends that he´s no coward.
That´s the spirit of adventure, nut cutting because the game is a challange.
*shakes head*
But hey, take WhereOrWherver for example, you all pic horde, allright.
One of you plays an undead, one a Tauren, one an Ork and one a Troll...
All differnt starting areas... You have to travel to meet. With the help of others...
That seems to be no problem at all... even if said players maybe played all orcs before, or all Alliance.
How come?
It wasn´t good as there were seperate Isles, now it´s not good that there´s one Isle... *sigh* People will NEVER be sattisfied by anything.
*sigh*

Exactly, if we knew about this in the first instance we'd be here today, 4 RL friends, who hang out in RL, hanging out together in game.

Im not demanding anything, just putting across my frustration at not being able to play a computer game, at the same time, same place, with my RL friends.

You are prolly right, even me, click tastic, may have over looked this, atleast then i would have been able to slap my forehead and go DOH, my fault..
anyhoo, at the end of the day, its a game, its to be enjoyed by yourself, and with your friends. Don't get me wrong, im loving this game, i can't remember so many sleepless nights, alteast not since daughter was born or i had 40 factories creating buff packs in SWG.. this game is excellent, in everyway (so far).. but im still frustrated I couldn't enjoy it with all my friends, at the same time during the early n00beh days.

Hehe treks these days are no problem.
When I first started a world trek involved 40 - 50 people, and a fair bit of dp anyway
The separation is a good thing imo, half the fun is exploring new lands and meeting the players that play there. Not alot of point in us all being in the same place.

hehe if you trek with the wrong people you can still get that fair amount of DP :0

Or would that be the "right" people?
If you just give into it, massing DP can be quite fun
As far as concerned over starting in the wrong region as friends, if everyone just asks politely in region for help with a trek I bet you wouldn't go 2 days before all joining up. Two days of a game most of us continue playing for a year or more is absolutely insignificant
I'd also personally hate to see people picking their race just to start in a different city. Your race is stuck with you for all the time you play, pick the one you really want to be based on appearance and lore. A guided trek to another city is an hour or two of gameplay and over and forgotten. Absolutely not worth the sacrifice of your first chioce of race.

Yup! My wife refuses to play anything other than a tryker, so whenever she makes a newbie island toon we know there will come a time that we have to trek her from tryker to Matis. Thats quite a fun trek for a small group!

So what is the difference between allowing players to pick their starting land and forcing them to trek between them with a high level group? Neither really earns them their way there and the latter just serves to needlesly frustrate new players and wastes their playing time. At some point players are going to get bored with whichever starter land they choose and will find that the long dangerous trek is still there for them to face, only now they'll hopefully have enough experience to enjoy it.
There is nothing in the lore that precludes the homins from mixing. I see ambassadors in every city. Clearly treks are being made between them as well. I even suspect the majority of players, given the choice, would still choose their race's homeland. And let's not forget, this isn't free. Players who choose to start in a homeland not their own will be at a disadvantage, which they will have to overcome.
