Where were you guys to have my back when I was accused of "harrassing a new player" when I commented on the name "Monkeypoop". LOL (I said something to the effect of "IF you wear a sign saying 'kick me', you really have no room to whine when I do")

I've come from a game called "Legend of Ares" that is -rife- with names that make script kiddies cackle with pre-adolesent glee (pwn34g3, I0wnj00, Ub3rD0oD, and a -plethora- that would get me banned for just using them on the forum). I have VERY low tolerance for people who openly disrespect and belittle the community in this manner.

I agree that the Naming Policy Should be enforced a bit more. On RoS I dont bother with reporting any of the names like "ilikepie" since its not the Mainland.... Those on the mainland I feel should have an "apropriate" like name. I personaly never consider anyone for Invite to Guild or team isnt something "resonable" e.g.... a name that is along the lines of "ilikepie" will get ignored.

I don't think it's a good idea for players to take the matter in thir own hands and tell Iamabadlynamedtoon that the name is bad, that will 1) lead to bad vibes 2) not solve the issue because only GMs can change names. Send a ticket to the GMs and have them deal with it. And Souls has promised in this very thread that they do take it serious.

That might be why nobody came to your aid. (I'm not familiar with the incident though)

Maybe we could come up with a name generator so that people could see a list of fun and applicable names at character creation. It may also be interesting to be able to see a list of 20 random character names of whatever race you choose. Then you could also repeat this aciton to see another list of 20.

Part of the problem is it is not easy to know what to name your character. And another part is not having it screaming out at you when you need it most, character creation. Some not of the rules at that point in time and some guidelines would be nice too.

Some lore on naming could influence this, however I do not believe we have that at our avail. Lineage and vaiation in names over the years. There is clearly some good NPC conventions in use, to expound on that would be cool too.

LOL, I was J/K when I asked why no one had my back. I'm -very- used to standing for what I beleive/feel; alone (and oft times against the grain).

I dont send tickets in on people, pretty much no matter what. Both your points A and B are valid...I just dont care. Someone walking around with the name "Monkeypoop" quite obviously doesnt care whether "bad vibes" are being created or felt and, frankly, I dont care if they feel them in return.

Let me back up the CSRs a bit, because this is one of the things they know exactly what to do about. Also, if they ask you why you think it is offensive it might just be for feedback, so they can record why it is being done, and not any attempt to mock you.

CSRs dont search for names to pick on. The way it is done now it is up to the community to report violations, and I have seen plenty of harmless names force-changed already. If you think something is inappropriate the CSR team will take action at your request.

I've seen a number of silly names on Silan, but I have only reported one. I did not approach that person, or comment to anyone else.

Not knowing what to name your character is one thing... But naming them something like "Sodomizer" is something entirely different. I'd almost rather someone name themselves an ingredient off their shampoo bottle than something like that.

Me, I toss together letters into something that looks nice. Even if I may not be certain how I'd say it out loud. *wry grin*

A random name generator would be good. It would be relatively simple, given the list of NPC names, to figure out the naming practices of each race, build the parts... so that players could get 'original' syllable combinations for names... But I don't know how to program even that basic of a program...

(naming practice study was a hobby in the SCA for me)

Hate to say it, but this name always bugs me. But then again, among the GMs Zerlin may be the only one to recognize its origins.

No comment on the character attached to this moniker, never really dealt with'em.

hehe - it may be hard to establish wether its my name or just me that annoys u :)

To be honest I'd never thought about it until I read this post...

My name is just the name I adopted online yeas ago and have used in many many games/forums/etc - in all honesty I didnt think twice when starting in ryzom.

I certainly wouldnt have minded changing my name initially on sign up if it was seen to be in violation of the CoC or detracting from other peoples gameplay, but having been here almost 2 years I'd be pretty peeved if I was expected to change it now.
