For the first: I haven't seen it happen, unless it was already "in progress" when the issues came up. Also of course since the only thing its come it has actually come up for is a lot of the new PvP-only content, the community is somewhat divided for that anyway. So maybe they were catering to a proportion of the community that could arguably have been considered left out in the past.

For the second: they have taken on board various suggestions, others have not been taken (or have been told "maybe in the future"). I honestly think they try to follow the communities requests, but there are reasonable limitations for what exactly can be accomplished.

I guess you could consider me a fanboy ;) I think the Devs really do make a sincere effort to keep us all happy, difficult as that is given everyone thinks different things are most important. The recent patch that introduced the new "newbie island" also fixed a number of long term issues (in-team healing in Guild vs Guild zones, landmark names being too long to see the dang compass distance meter, placing landmarks directly at your position for more accurate mat cataloguing etc).

Hope that helps answer your questions!

heh I also played SWG, except the combat upgrade 1 did me in. when i logged on and tried to play my bounty hunter.. and got soloed.. often by stormtroopers i used to kill blindfolded, I quit. a Fanboy, I am not. so i packed my stuff and moved on, i drifted to many, MANY mmo games, usually free trials that didn't last out the free trial, and quit many times. and now I stand on Atys, and see how the game is not a level/class based system and i smile, knowing, if i wanted to, i could be psycho with a gun that casts debilitating spells on my enemy, or i could be a support type character. or i could simply wield a gun and no ape on my enemies.

You will like the game Wiske.

I have cancelled my 3 SWG account of 3 years to play this game. Much more entertaining (still miss pre-cu SWG) and its not run by SOE! Hurray!

Left SWG Chimaera end of 2005, but recently went back for a month to see how things were. Any old Chimaera people may well be seeing a resurgence of RRF/SFR :D

I guess I sort of qualify as an SWG refugee. I liked the original version of SWG (the skill-based version, freeform, etc). I disliked the CU but it had enough of the old system in it that I could survive. When NGE switched it to a pure class-level game, I bailed.

This is not to say that I don't like or have never enjoyed class-based games. I played COH for a year, then bailed on that too... then went back for COV. I still have an open account there. I think COH has a marvelous combat engine... But it's so simplistic that I find it can't hold my attention. I log in, do a mission or two, get bored, and log out. My friends can't understand this... COH is apparently interesting enough to them (no idea how) to keep them engaged for hours on end.

What I like about Ryzom is not entirely its similarity to SWG per se. I like the same fundamental things about both. The free-form, skill-based system, where you earn XP for what you do (melee fight? Get melee exp... etc), and where you can be whatever you want, rather than being locked into a particular class. This was true to an extent for SWG, though not as flexibly as Ryzom is (since you were limited on the total skill boxes you could learn), but what I like about a good RPG is the freedom, the open-ended-ness.

I don't think this comes from SWG, but from further back in my past... from the table-top game Champions. That was a points-based game where you could put points into whatever you wanted (pending GM's permission of course). There were no "profesisons" or "classes" and no levels. I loved that game, and still to this day consider it the best RPG system ever devised.

So, Ryzom and the original SWG share some traits that remind me of Champions and that is why I like them. Because they are free-form and open-ended, these games are far more complex than other similar games on the market. Champions was often knocked as being "overly complex" -- and I bet people may thing that of Ryzom (I know they did of SWG). But that's just what attracts me to all 3 games -- complexity == interesting to me. If it's too simple (like COH is) I just get bored.

And that's why I quit SWG when NGE came out -- they made it simple on purpose (because the old game was "too complex'" for people) and it turned me off completely.

Adult Gaming Community ... yes. Ryzom's community is mature, articulate, and friendly. It's one of the things I love most about the game.
