Another SWG refugee, here, and finding a skill-based system--let alone one not restricted to a pre-set amount of points--very nearly brought tears to my eyes.
I'm still in the process of downloading. I haven't got an in-game name or anything yet but there's a certain comfort level already finding so many SWGers here on the forums, and a complete absense of l33t kiddies /cheer
Lemme tell ya... I can't wait to harvest, dig, and get good and brain-fried learning the crafting system. And I'm sure I'll be the noob on the island asking everyone where I can find the nearest power hammer.
One question I do have atm is whether or not there's resource qualities, not just types. Anyone?

yeps, basic, fine, choice, excellent, supreme. On the starter islands only basic-choice are available, and for supreme you'll need to venture into the prime roots or smack some bosses around

There is qualities alright in both harvestable and quarterable materials. Do however take note that there are 2 different kinds of quality.
The most important will probably be the skill level dependant item quality. Foraging quality 50 materials will only allow you to craft items with those up to an item quality of 50. That quality in return dictates at what skill-level said craft items are most efficient. Eitherway, these quality levels go up to quality 250 (ql250 abreviated in-game)
The second type of quality is what some call grade as well, and these would pretty much be comparable to the quality % of materials in SWG. You have 5 grades; basic, fine, choice, excellent, supreme; with basic being the lowest scraps and supreme the scarce 'wonder'.
These affect the amount of pre-craft values once combined in a plan. I doubt I need to explain that values quickly hit rock bottom with basic and skyrocket with supreme.
General rule of thumb would be; the higher in both qualities, the higher the non-fixed stats on items.

What Rushin says it's true: there are the qualities of the mats: supreme>excellent>choice>fine>basic.
But besides of that, each mat has it's own characteristics that differs for the nuance of it you find. You can look for example at the healing/elemental speed in hash amber versus sha amber to see a comparison.
The stats of these materials vary greatly with their quality. So it's not always a mechancial relation. What I mean: it's not enough to use progressively the best quality of the material to have best results.
Add to this the looted mats, mainly those from named mobs.
As you can see in every crafted item you have a slot with a number of pieces of mat of the same cathegory. For example you have 20 pieces of magical focus in amps. This slot can be filled with same mat, let's say amber in our example. Or... not! Real experimentation comes when you combine in same slot different qualities and different mats.
Optimising one stat generally triggers lowering other stats though, so you have to take care of this fine balance.
And to make things even more complicated, sometimes using basic or fine mats instead of lowering final results just make them better.

One thing though: do not expect mastering in Ryzom happen in an afternoon or even in a week. Don't even try if you don't want to get burnt. This game hasn't undergone the progressive "improvement" SWG has been through that made it 1. possible mastering everything in no time; 2. make the best crafted items be available for anyone (there are still things to discover in Ryzom, and this is good news for everybody who starts now); 3. make only objects created by masters be useful (you can make beautiful and useful things at level 30-50 as well, and have the satisfaction of seeing them actually used by real people).

Congratulations! You've already fried my brain with these answers. Sounds like a pretty steep learning curve, which is just the way I like it.
Now, if only I could get a grasp on the 'factions'. As a sworn rebel for life, I'm eyeing the Karavan with a certain level of suspicion

As for faction... just don't rush into anything. After 3 months of playing I think you have to consider:
- the story (which is huge, the world has a whole history to live in, and this history is not entirely written, you can still be a part of this history and make a difference);
- the friends you make (it's important to play with those you like);
- the game economy (not in what is sold over market, but which faction is the most numerous, which has most possessions, how, who is the underdog etc)
- practical advantages (check everything is told to you - it's a free world therfore a part of what is told to you is folklore);
- the politics (game mechanics make no guild alone be able to pursue its interests, therefore the network of relations, faction cross relations even, is of utterly importance;
- game mechanics (faction and pvp is probably the most complicated system here as compared to other MMOs I've been into. Let me give you just one example: as neutral you can do duels and fight at your will into the Outpost <sort of Bases from SWG but giving the owner great advantages> wars, so there is place for neutrals to have lots of pvp if they want to... this little thing alone make a world of difference);
- community psychology (people here had for a very long time no pvp at all. This makes the pvp perception very different from total rejection to bad ganking, from honourable approaches to dragging aggro over diggers, from friendly duels to huge battles).

The reason I say this, is because both Kami and Karavan are mysterious to some extent - we don't know everything about them (and they only want us to know certain propagandized things about ourselves), and their motives are unclear (though their followers probably wouldn't agree with that statement, of course ). They are also both "higher powers," equally capable of controlling teleportation and resurrection (which might suggest these abilities are powers of Atys, not exclusive to the cults - that we homins just haven't the magic/technology to control them...yet).
On a side note, neutrality can be challenging since we have no access to certain teleports - lvl200-250 regions and Prime Roots, as well as many others. We do have one teleport in most sub-200 non-Roots regions, though, and two in some. We also have very complex, interesting, and delicate politics, such as outposts and relations with Kamist and Karavaneer guilds.
Anyway, there are several similarities between the factions, despite their different ideals and bases. There are also similarities between their followers. The factions are religious cults, so most of the followers of either cult have some degree of "faith" and are willing to do almost anything their god/goddess (or the gods' servants/guardians, the Kami and Karavan, respectively) asks of them - including, obviously, killing other homins.
My main character, Jelathnia, for a contrasting example, is a neutral hominist and believes the cults are a dividing, harmful, and ultimately weakening influence on hominity, because lately the Kami and Karavan have pretty much ignored the kitin as they are obsessed with their war against each other. They seem to encourage their followers (pawns) to fight their war at all costs, and above all else.
Neutrals tend to be free thinkers, some with some degree of rebelliousness against the cults. So that is basically why I see neutrality as the "underdog faction," in a way.
In any case, have information, and choose the path which best suits your character. I apologise for any biased nature of this post.

I too am an SWG refugee. I have actually had my eye on Saga of Ryzom for some time. I was misinformed by someone who advised me against getting the game months ago. I used to play SWG as well (started at launch) and I cancelled my SOE pass and all five of the games that I played on it when they decided to destroy the game with the NGE. I thought "What the heck!" and decided to give it a try. So this Evening I finally started my 7 day trial acount and downloaded/installed. I am amazed at what I have seen so far! I have only tried a couple hours so far, but I am beyond pleased with I have already experienced. I really don't know what to say. I am stunned. I only wish I had tried it sooner. I still have one other MMO (WoW) and I am waiting for Huxley (for my MMO FPS tactical fix to replace Planetside), but I must say this is the greatest find I have happened upon in a long time!
