I was under the impression that the "hold aggro" effect was simply from hit rate, and not related to reach.

Mobs just tend to go after those players that are going after them, every time you attack you have a chance to pull aggro to yourself. So a one-handed meleer or dagger wielder with 40 or 60 hits perminute just gets the mob's attention much more frequently than someone attacking 30 hpm.

I thought it was number of attacks over time. A fighter dualwielding a sword and a dagger has the same hitrate as one wielding a sword and a shield, but the former hits with two weapons in the same time the later hits with one. The dualwielder seems to draw aggro a lot more than the 1-hander with shield.

It's hard to tell because the weapons with a high hitrate are also the ones with a low reach. Though we could try sending a piker (20 reach, 33 hpm) and an axeman (10 reach, 27 hpm) after the same mob and see who the mob likes more ;)

I agree with Sidusar

I believe the drawing agro is simply # of actions over time will get you more agro if you are within agro range. A healer spamming heals within agro range will draw agro although they're cast time will put them in the aproximately 20 hpm range and have huge range compared to mele weapons. The dual wielder as someone mentioned is performing two combat actions each time they attack. The one hander/shield user is only perfroming 1 combat action. This would thus then have the dual wielder drawing agro more often as they are performing more actions over the same time than the one hander/shield user.

Something else to consider here is that healers (and elementalists) often use double spells, which count as two actions in one. As I recall the basic casting time for a double spell is three seconds. With 100% speed amps that's decreased to 1.5 seconds, so at 2 actions per spell that's a huge 80 hpm for a spamming healer

Even when using single spells with only 80% speed amps, you're still at 39 hpm. Far more than any 2-handed weapon can possibly do and even faster than most 1-handed weapons. Only 1-handed weapons with maximum speed would be slightly faster (40 hpm, wasn't it?).

So if aggro does depend on number of actions over time, it's no wonder the creatures always go after the mages :)

Probably true if you are fighting one mob. But, and it's a big but, when you have plods clone off 3 or 4 clones, you now have 4 or 5 mobs. You must continue hitting them to hold their attention. Now u could dual weild daggers and get a very high hit rate within a small radius...... or ..... u could use a pike and get a high hite rate over a wide radius. Your chances of catching a wandering plod who has just decided he wants to go munch your healer are much greater with the large reach as he quickly gets outta range of the dagger. If u move towards him, you move away from the other guys.

I can't recall the numbers off hand but say yu in a middle of a bunch pf plods and have a 5m reach on daggers and 20m on pikes, that means hitting things within a 10m circle or a 40m circle. Obviously you are gonna hit more things in the latter.

Again, this ia subjective impression from having battled these things with various weps. After my damage got nerfed from 1050 to 847, I tried switching to ax and sword (in team damage done much less important than 4700 HP) and had a lot more trouble "holding" clones. So I went back to pike.

I thought circular attack only hits things that are already attacking you in melee. In that case, pikes and daggers would be equally effective. Even if a plod is in the pike range, it wouldn't count as an attack against it unles it's attacking you, right?

Edit: I'm willing to bet weapon range does have some effect on holding aggro though.

When a single plod clones itself, making 4 or 5 copies of itself, they are all "duplicates" of the original one. Since he was already attacking you, they all continue to attack you unless drawn off by action from teamates. Most of the time I can hold 2 or 3 "post clone". When it's 4 or 5 clones, most times I will lose at least 1 .... or 2 ..... though it's quite a kick those times when you are able to keep them all of ya buddies. Peeps in LA tend to be most appreciative :) .
