Once I had to make a new name for an alt so I grabbed my Book of Vile Darkness. Turns out I cannot use god and/or demon names? I know at least one Mephisto and knew a mephistow as well. Triton is the god of the sea, seen that dude.
I have seen a Belgarath, no doubt there is a Polgara and all the other names from that series as well.
Basic is a copyrighted name for a programming language.
The list with names that should officially be banned but are allowed (looking the other way) is rather lengthy and as long as you will not name your character something offensive I think you are okee.

I really hope to run into Your_Name_Here (YourNameHere or Yonahe) soon!

Some D&D God and Demon names (non Wotc ones) are open content, less bother about using those.

Come to god-names Ma-Duk is from Marduk it seems, a babylonian God, so there's precident for deliberate misspelling.

Begolas, Cegolas, Degolas etc is pushing it a bit I think though ;)

I see "Wolverine" is on the list - wasn't that a rather bad tempered beast long before Marvel(tm) got any-where near it? Isn't nature an obvious case of

*checks for correct term*

Prior Art ?

"Picture a weasel -- and most of us can do that, for we have met that little demon of destruction, that small atom of insensate courage, that symbol of slaughter, sleeplessness, and tireless, incredible activity -- picture that scrap of demoniac fury, multiply that mite some fifty times, and you have the likeness of a Wolverine."

Oh they missed off Mad-duck as well

You take away Legolas, then you have to take away my name also, Ariwen is the Daughter of the Elf king in Rivendale. So you want to ban names from novels, what else do we have???

pff it seems my post was misunderstood aswell :(

as to Ariwen she's NOT the daughter of Elrond as his daughter is called Arwen (a subtile difference I know but still...)

p.s. If don't mind names from Tolkiens Lord of the Rings so much, I'd rather have names like sexxxybabe, hotchick, madman, psycokiller, cooldude, etc banned as they are not names....

Hardly. An implementation of basic language or language specification document would be copyrighted. Copyright protects innovative works like computer programs, books and so on. There is plenty of trademarks for word 'basic', like many other normal words. Heck, even word 'Mikos' is trademarked.

Prior Art relates to patent legislation, not trademarks. There is no problem trademarking normal words like 'apple'.

Sorry for being dull.

But selling a product that wears the name Apple is allowed in any business as long as it is not in the same line of business as the big computer company and will not wear a similar logo.
So selling fruit and labeling it "Apple" and hanging a picture of a green, shiny, intact apple overhead the products named "Apple" will not get you in a legal battle with Mr. Jobs.

It can even go the other way around where a productname is used so much it becomes a normal word in spoken language, any company is allowed to sell their similar product under the same productlinedescription. Example is the walkman, a small, portable device for playing musiccasettes. Sony used it as a copyrighted name, but the public started calling every portable musiccasette playing machine a walkman and then some manufacturers as well. Sony sued and lost.

Anyway, I think Wolverine is an animal like Blue Tit and Lion. If animal names are not allowed, several players I know have a problem.

Though the power to sprout an adamantium beak to pierce milk bottle tops isn't really as impressive.

But try taking the milk bottle away from it :)

Could be... I was busting her because that nick is used in a Lore quote. Jyudas is the son of a famous Fyros in lore IIRC.
